Hi
Have the early gti engine on a W plate. Just taking the head off to change the valves (coolant froze in winter, my fault). Going smoothly so far, no troublesome bolts etc
I've done the job on 4 other cars before but never needed a skim. However, will get this head skimmed even if it is arrow straight . What's the likely cost of a skim, anything to look out for when choosing a place to do it?
Any other things I should do to this head whilst rebuilding it? Do they respond well to any smoothing and porting?
Also, do I need the correct timing pins on reassembly or will suitable drill bits do?
Cheers, DB

The coolant froze? So what damage did it do? No cracked block?
I'd buy some new O rings for where the metal coolant pipe slots into the water pump housing and thermostat block.

Sgould be fine, its not the same as an overheating headgasket fail. Although you can never be sure of the problems you cant see.
