Recently I've being hearing a whining sound whilst in 4th and 5th gears. I know this is often a bad sign as it could be a problem with the gearbox, although I'm hoping for a more simple problem, this could be the final nail in the 206's coffin though :/ Can anyone help me?

Without hearing the sound itself I would say at a guess it's the gearbox bearing, take it to a garage and have it checked.
Does the whining disappear when the clutch is pressed?

4th and 5th shouldnt whine, its very rare for the input shaft end bearing to fail
Have you checked your gearbox oil level?

Haven't done any proper checks as of yet, been too busy with work. Not using the car as much though, so I might drop it down a friends garage tonight to see what he thinks. But yes the whining disappears whilst the clutch is down.
It started in 3rd and 4th, now it's moved from 3rd/4th to 4th/5th. Was thinking about putting a longer 5th gear in anyway but I'll have a look see what needs fixing (if it needs fixing)
Thanks Guys
