Had MOT today (passed!) but during test, the engine dropped half the coolant out as fan did not cut in. Garage wouldn't touch it saying that the fault is the fact that I have done a air-con delete. But it HAS been working fine...
Since, I have accurately measured resistance from the coolant sensor, tested the fan and checked obvious plugs. Fan still not cutting in, but readout of dash appears correct.
But.. when the fan hits 100 deg when it should cut in, I get the diag light on the dash. I have left it running close to the red, but still nothing.
PP2000 gives these faults - could the removal of the air con have done this? Do I need to disable anything? Any help really appreciated as I am on my own on this one...

Disconnect the coolant sensor. Does the fan kick in?

It's the car protecting itself. If it can't tell how hot the engine is it should switch the fan on to make sure it doesn't overheat. It plays it safe.

I have started the car with the coolant sensor unplugged and I get the "STOP" lighting up on the dials, but no fan...

Have you tried sending a +ve feed direct to the fan? Chances are it's just a knackered relay or the wiring into the relay is badly corroded.

Wonder also if the resistor is kaput, mines kaput and disconected at the moment and joined together, meaning no air con (slow speed fan) and just the high speed fan working.
Temperary measure till i get time to take bumper off to replace the resistor.

Unplug the resistor and bypass it with a chunky piece of cable.

Thanks for replies guys.
This is a good idea - just bypass all this stuff altogether. But the sensor works on resisting the voltage - dropping from around 1.4v ~ 0.3v (which is when the fan *should* cut in). I will need a separate sensor which will switch the relay to +12v.
Unless anyone can think of an alternative??

I am not with the car otherwise I would check, but am I right in thinking that the dash requires the coolant sensor - or does it come from another sensor? Just thinking I could use the tap in the thermostat housing for the new switch....

I meant bypass the resistor just to test if it's the problem. I don't think it is though.

The coolant sensor operates the gauge via the ecu. When it gets hot the ecu switches on one relay which is wired through the resistor which reduces current to the fan meaning it spins slowly.
At higher temperatures the ecu switches the other relay which isn't connected to the resistor meaning the fan runs at higher speeds.

Righto - makes sense Ed.
I did test the resistance and there was nothing there. Problem is, when I trained, ECU and such were in their infancy, so a problem like this was very simple - fuse, fan, relay or switch!
I have decided to put a new electric fan in - lighter, more efficient cooling and less drain on power. Will take a bit of wiring but at least I won't have to worry about all the ECU b*ll*cks...

Just fix what's there. Standard fan is perfect for standard radiator.

True enough, but I was only thinking that while everything else is out of the way, it would be logical. Only a matter of time before a 11 year old fan has its day...
