Bizarre considering it's hardly ever used, my mate noticed the airbag panel has come away at the forward edge exposing what I assume is the bag itself!? Is this a job for an upholsterer or is there a quick fix?

No quick fix. you need to remove the seat and remove the cushions and airbag from the seat frame. then separate it from the cushion and purchase a new airbag mounting plastic part that will stop the airbag coming away from the cushion. Big job.
