After a frustrating Saturday afternoon trying to fault find the tow hitch wiring on the MPV, we finally made it to Mallory Park for the CSCC Revival event.

Qualy
A good turnout meant 16 on the grid for the sports V saloons races. I was getting into the groove in qualifying and trying to recall my braking points from the last visit here in 2012. I caught a very quick Metro and it took me 3 laps to get past him, then as I finally passed him going into Gerrards I looked in my mirror and saw smoke pouring out of his bonnet. On the next lap, halfway round Gerrards the car lost front end grip and I went shooting off onto the grass, luckily I was able to recover it and continue, but there was obviously something on the surface so I pulled into the paddock with 9 laps completed and a time of 57.25. This put me 9th on the grid with a Fiesta ST in 8th and a Honda CRX in 7th, both with qualifying times about .3 of a second faster. They were my targets for the race...

Race one
It was a rolling start and I think I was passed by a Midget who jumped the gun a little bit. Having watched the video I was way too cautious on the first corner, I seem to say that a lot! The Fiesta and CRX disappeared into the distance and I spent a long time trying to get past the Midget, great fun and we came extremely close to touching several times, but there was always a little bit of racing room. I was able to reel him in on the brakes at the Esses and Hairpin, but he would pull away out of the hairpin and had a better exit from Gerrards. I knew that the hairpin was the place to do it and eventually got myself into position and managed to make a pass, then let the car run wide on the exit so he would have to go round me the long way at the Elbow. I held him off into Gerrards and then it was a case of defending my position for as long as possible. Unfortunately the chequered flag didn’t come out as soon as I hoped, and as we caught a backmarker (the aforementioned Metro) there were no blue flags and he blocked me at the hairpin, allowing the Midget to get alongside on the exit and go round the outside at Elbow. We were side by side down the start/finish straight and at one point I thought he was trying to run me onto the grass, but he left me just enough room... We caught more backmarkers, he opened the gap, more backmarkers, I closed the gap but couldn't get past him again and then the flag came. So I finished in 8th but only because of DNFs in front of me. Great race, had a chat with the Midget driver afterwards and he was equally thrilled with the close racing. Fastest lap time 56.5 (my previous best was 56.9).

Race two
This was a sealed handicap race, didn’t find that out until the drivers briefing in the morning. Oh well, just race as hard as you can eh! Started in 8th place, rolling start again. Got caught napping as the lights went out and cars swarmed all over me, don't know how many places I lost. Also the CRX span going in to Gerrards and I think that slowed us all up, allowing the first pack to get away. Having watched the onboard video, I also knocked it into 4th gear, no idea why. By lap 2 the Midget from the first race was 100 metres ahead, I was now lapping behind a Spitfire who had the same fast/slow characteristics as the Midget. A few laps behind him checking out his weak spots and I made a pass, I think it was at the Esses??? He was all over the back of me until a few laps from the end when I pulled a gap... and that's all I remember. Car was handling funny and felt slower, reflected in the lap times with a best of 57.3. Pretty sure this was caused by me swapping the front tyres around between races to even the wear (stupid idea!). I think I finished 9th on Handicap as my handicap time was 56.5 so I was losing time hand over fist. Still really good fun, felt like a very long 15 mins!

Looking forward to Donny, a much more open circuit where the gearing is better suited (I tried 1st and 2nd gear at the Mallory Hairpin and neither was any good, as you'll see in the onboard video).

Been doing quite a lot on the car recently, thought it might be worth an update:

Finally finished painting the 306 wheels I bought last year and bought and fitted a pair of Nankang NS-2R tyres. I'm going to run these on the back in the dry, with the aim of having another pair with extra cuts in them to run on the back in the wet and swap these to the front. Won't be as good as proper wets but will allow me to at least survive a proper downpour. I've fitted them to the front for now just so I can scrub them in (hopefully on the airfield at work...).

During recent races the gear change has got quite noisy and clunky feeling. I haven't changed the gearbox oil since I bought the car 2 years ago so I did an oil change on it today, hopefully that will smooth things out a bit. The old oil was very metallic, as expected.
The plan for this winter is to buy an LSD, get it fitted and at the same time have the box overhauled and a short ratio CWP fitted, just need to figure out what ratio I want. I want to leave a little room for a small power increase and to not have it sat on the limiter at any track (Rockingham between turns 1 & 2/Silverstone hangar straight for example).
Speaking of power increase, I can't afford to modify or change anything on the engine, but I can get the setup checked at Emerald (30 miles from my house) and make sure it's running at optimum. The close ratio gears will then at least let me use more of the power more of the time Smile

The power steering is another area that's been giving me some issues for a while now. It seems to weep quite a lot during a race and the fluid is near boiling by the end. I noticed today that the loop in front of the rad that's supposed to help with cooling is actually behind the number plate part of the front bumper, so out came the hole saw... this should help a little bit:

 


Also made a new camera mount using an exhaust clamp and an old monopod, giving a good viewpoint just over my left shoulder. Should keep the scrutineers happy, the old mount was a spring clamp secured with a tie wrap, always got a raised eyebrow when they checked it Wink

 


In the background of that pic you can also see where I've been scraping off sound deadening. There were a few bit's left in the car, so I've gone on a purge and pulled off some more trim and a few other bits and pieces, as well as grinding out the inside of the boot and bonnet. Hoping to save 10KG by the time I race at Donington on the 23rd, but I know that's going to be difficult to achieve without spending money on polycarbonate windows (another planned winter job).

Another area I've been looking at is suspension setup, specifically negative camber, or a way to add it. I had a good look at the top mounts today and noticed that they appear to be fitted back to front. I can only assume this is something to do with the strut brace fitting? Anyway, can I just drill some new holes further inboard to induce more negative camber? Anyone know any measurements that give a set amount of camber?

 


 


Cleaned all the old dayglo orange tape off, looks much cleaner now Very Happy

looking good, i have folowed you with drilling the holes in the number plate area, cooling being my focus atm, drilling the top mounts will the the easiest way to do the camber but depends alot on space, obviously you will probably not be able to use the strut brace unles its got adjustment on it, i would say an inch over on the top mount hols wil be ample for some camber best way would be to undo the bolts holdin the strut to the car and push it over and see how much camber you will get for a rough idea hard bit will be getting the holes in the right place

Drilling the holes in the right place "should" be easy, by making a cardboard template of the original holes and sliding it over to the new location. I'll have to enlarge the central hole too. This guy thinks 10mm=1 deg camber on a 306, so I can't see it being too different on a 206:

 


I had fade with the old Yellowstuff pads, they also lacked bite. The DS3000's have been as good as everyone says, so much more confidence inspiring. I'm running 266mm discs and I've had no fade problems in the 3 races since fitting them (Donington and Mallory).

Also ordered some new rear brake pads as the current ones are nearly dead. Snapped a throttle return spring today too, so ordered some spares (I love ebay...).

Dont forget you need to redo your drop links/cut off the bracket on the coilovers when you rum more than 2 degrees

Cheers mate, it's supposed to be approx 175bhp at the moment, I can't confirm that as it's not been on a dyno since I bought it. It will pull a lot better once we get an LSD, lower gearing and a dyno session.

Nice one Addaz, can you give me more info? I was going to replace the drop links with rose joint links anyway, seems a good time to do it.

The camber guage arrived today, so I quickly zeroed it and ran outside to give it a go. Now before anyone says it, I know it's supposed to be done on a billiard table flat surface but my drive is fairly flat and I was intrigued to see what sort of reading I would get. So, -0.5 on the front left and +/-0 on the front right. Some large adjustments are needed...

Unfortunately my race season has been pretty much scuppered by the current climate in Iraq, so I'm off to Cyprus next week for an unknown amount of time:

The positives from that are that I get paid more and won't be paying for any race entries, so I can spend that money on go faster bits for the 206 Smile

Current shopping list includes polycarbonate windows, 25mm rear ARB and another pair of NS-2R tyres, maybe even the LSD if this situation drags on...
