Hi

Have just brought an accident damaged car, installed a battery and the engine just clicks, put the gear into 1st to see if the starter was jammed, but could not turn engine. The car is now over a pit where I managed to turn the car over using the crankshaft bolt until the engine locks, I think maybe when it gets to the compression stroke. Turning the car by key now turns the engine for about a second till its gets to the compression stroke. Any ideas what it could be, my only thought is that the car went into a ditch and swallowed some water, but not sure.

2003 1.4 Hdi

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,

Best advice I can give is remove the spark plugs and then try turning it over, if it has swallowed water then you should be able to see it in the cylinders.

Does it stop dead? or does it go tight?

Could be a valve issue. As seatock says, you could whip the glowers out and try.

Thanks for the replies, have just taken the glow plugs out...what a nice job..not. Spun the engine over by hand and oil has come shooting out of the glow plug holes ???

Sounds like a head off job to me, could be the rings are shot or something else. Is it oil & not diesel? See if you can suction the oil out and then try cranking it over and see if any more oil appears.
