Yesterday I brought my 2003 GTI in for a clutch change because the pedal would go to the floor on occasion and I couldn't get it in gear until I lifted the pedal up and depressed it again. It first happended over a year ago and it started happening more often. The car had 99000 KM when I bought it and I've put 30000 KM so I figued it was time.

So... I bought a Valeo clutch kit, cable, and the throwout fork... 240 euro. The mechanic charged me 150 euro. What a job... he had the subframe off, battery box and air box out. I asked to see the old parts, expecting to see a worn out clutch... I was shocked to see that I could still read VALEO on the clutch disc that was stamped in ink! All I needed was a new cable! I figure the previous owner changed the clutch about the time I bought the car but didn't replace the cable. I never met the actual owner of the car. I bought it through a third party and was not given any info about the cars history.

It would have been worthwhile for me to just have tried replacing the cable! Mad At least now I know everything is good to go!

well you shouldn't replaced the clutch in the first place,as what you described for the pedal hit the floor, that is a clutch cable for sure, you can keep the old clutch, and use it another time,or sell it for a friend.

Yeah... That's what I thought until I started reading some of posts on clutches on the site. Should have followed my instincts. I'll just keep the old clutch for now.

Not strictly true all the time, sometimes the pedal going to the floor is caused by the release bearing eating it's way through the pressure plate spring fingers.

Surely you would hear that? Laughing
