Hi, I'm new here so bear with me. I know nothing about cars.

I have a knocking sound coming from what seems to be the back of the car. In all fairness I can't pin point it exactly when I'm driving. I've looked under to see if anything is hanging down but everything seems to be ok. But again, I wouldn't know whats normal under a car. Nothing appears to be out of place. Also there is nothing stuck in the wheels.

So, anyone got any suggestions? And more importantly, if its likely to be expensive to sort. Oh yeah, and is it safe to drive? The faster I drive, the faster and louder the knocking appears to be. I'm a bit worried about something snapping or dropping off.

Could be gearing if it increases with speed.

Jack the rear of the car up (I do 1 side at a time) remembering to put blocks under the front wheels, release the handbrake and rotate the rear wheels, if you can hear the noise then chances are it could be a wheel bearing which are not too expensive or complicated to replace.

Check that the rear seat backreat is secured firmly.
Check that the spare wheel carrier is tight.
With the engine cold, grab the exhaust and move side to side and up and down quite firmly.

Any of these can cause the knock and are much cheaper to fix than a new axle.

I am not saying it isn't the axle but quite a few things to eliminate first.

Morris 1000, Austin 1100, Escort Mk2, Fiat Mirafiori, Alfa 33, Alfa GT Junior, Alfasud, Alfetta GTV (2x), Alfa 164 3.0 V6, Alfa 164 2.0, Alfa 75 V6, Alfa 156 2.4 (diesel remapped 200bhp), Alfa 147 GTA (3.6 295bhp), Alfa 159 (diesel remapped 245bhp 300ft.lbs @ 2500rpm)
Why isn't my daughter an Alfaholic?
