Hi Guys,

I have an 2005 1.4 and over the last couple of days when i press the clutch the pedal starts to depress the clutch as normal but after about an inch of travel there's a loud cracking sound from the pedal and the pedal bangs to the floor with no resistance leaving me unable to change a gear ,
When i release the pedal and press it again it works fine,

It has done this twice about 3 days ago and last night on the way home from work it did it about 5 or 6 times.

Is this a sign the cables about to snap or what?

I rely on the car for work so was considering replacing the whole clutch and the cable but just thought i would ask on here first in case it was something silly i am not spotting

Regards Terry

It sounds like the auto adjuster is failing. This is part of the cable so you'd need to change the whole cable. The cable itself is about £30 brand new.

Sounds to me like the bearing has worn through the diaphragm springs on the pressure plate.

No worries mate. I don't believe that to be the problem either because the tell tale sign of the release bearing being at fault is a squealing noise which may be heard whilst the pedal is depressed but once pressed, it is significantly louder. I had the same problem with the clutch cable and also had a faulty release bearing so have had experience with the two.

I hope you have very, very long thin and strong fingers. A good "feel" when working blind and a genuine Peugeot cable.

If you don't have all the above changing the cable is a b***h!

I can do it in 15 mins (having done a few now) but the first one was about 4 hours.

Good luck.
