MOT advises I change my back box, and don't want to put another stock one on as they look rubbish as they point down
But I have been struggling to find after market ones that aren't way too over the top, just want a smart oval/circle tailpipe
Any suggestions? What have people used on their 1.4 HDI's ??

have a look on eurocarparts timolevs - there's a Bosal stock exhaust based on the sport trim. It says "chrome tip" in the 'details'. It's less than £40 delivered if I remember correctly.

That is a vast improvement on my current one!
Now do I resist the temptation to buy a nice shiny new stainless de-cat aha

Depends, I guess.
From an insurance point of view, one is undoubtedly a modification, the other was an optional extra and could easily pass as standard.
The stainless route will probably be 10x the cost too.

I modified a 1.4 petrol Sportex backbox (3" round) onto the other halfs 1.4 HDi. It was 2" too long, but cut and welded the end back on.
There was a slight increase in noise (very little tbh) but it looks a lot better than the pointy downy one!
The backbox will be coming off soon, to be replaced with just a straight thru pipe with a tip added. Decat will appear after that!

It's not noise I'm after, it's just the appearance of the 'point downy one' is appalling

You won't get much extra noise as it's a diesel ..
I've read that they sound different to a petrol due to the way the exhaust works ..

I agree - I have the same one and it's gone pretty rusty!
Might sort out a new exhaust myself, I patched up the centre pipe with Metallic to get it through the MOT, but the whole thing is pretty rusted up.
I've bitten the bullet and ordered a whole exhaust - £75 ish delivered.
For a whole system, you can go for either CarPartsGiant:
www.carpartgiant.co.uk...x.aspx?F=1
www.carpartgiant.co.uk...s.aspx?F=1
Which is £75 ish including £11 delivery
or
I went for a link pipe from Cats2u (£37.02 delivered)
Backbox with chrome tail pipe from CarParts4Less (£38.12 delivered)
www.carparts4less.co.u...amp;000536

No probs.
For the cost of the whole lot, despite the fact it's rusted through near the join to the silencer, it's well worth changing the whole lot.
It says on 'cats2u' that the link pipe is stainless steel too, apparently.
I think both parts should be here on Thursday, so I'll take some photos for you.
