Driving my car home on Friday and the battery charging warning came on.

Quick test with my volt meter and its not charging (Only 12v and dropping when load put on it).

Also noticed that the exhaust was blowing at the maniold area a bit.

Took the heat shield off and noticed there is a crack on one of the branches so looks like I need a new manifold.

Well you need a new alternator, and you will fix the battery problem,or fix the alternator you have now, about the manifold,i would say that you are driving a 1.4 8V car,as this is a very common issue with this engine,so it should be replaced as soon as you can,as this effect on the sound of the engine, specially when there is a load on the engine, and also it effects the fuel MPG as well.

The car is a 1.6 16v.

Not sure if to get my alternator repaired or just put a second hand one.

Go to the local motor factors and get a service exchange reconditioned alternator. As good, if not better than a brand new one.
No point buying a second hand one as it could last a few days before giving up.

Pointless repairing them unless you are going to go to town and replace everything at once (bearings, brushes, windings, rectifier plus other bits), by which time the cost will have gone up to the price of a recon unit and will have taken a few days rather than the couple of hours it takes to take it off, go to the factors, exchange unit, come home, have brew and refit.
Probably looking at around £150, but worth it to know it should be good for the rest of the life of the car.

Evening,

See if you can get a cheap one from a scrappy then, no gurantees but if you're lucky it will keep it going.

Macca is right a reconditioned unit is the way to go. For the time, effort and skill required rebuilding isn't a good option and doesn't come with a warrenty.

Personally i'd use a new/remanufactured one, do it once, do it properly...

Regards, Richard.

EDIT: Might alsp be worth mentioning: to test an alternator the engine rpm need to be 1500/2000rpm.
