Hi everybody,

I'm new in this forum so I'm sorry if there's already a topic about my question, but I couldn't find it Sad

The thing is that this Tuesday I'll buy a second handed Peugeot 206 Diesel 2l Hdi (year 2002 and 100.000 of mileage). I know nothing about cars (I'm quite new in this area); however I'm lucky since a friend of mine with some knowledge is coming with me to check it, but he doesn't know anything about this specific car.

My question hence is: what must we check when viewing this car?

Thank you very much in advance Wink

I'd say from a general 206 viewpoint and things that seem to be a common fault:-

1> Central locking - Check that it locks all the doors and the locks don't bounce back up

2> Drop links, lower arms - If you hear a knocking from the front end, chances are it's 1 of these

3> Obviously all electrics need checking

4> Check the rear axle for bending, can be visually check by looking at the rear wheels and whether they are leaning in / out

I'm sure someone else will be along soon to add more.

General for 206s - rear axle bearings, due to the rear setup with torsion bars instead of coil springs. Not sure how best test them though...
Seat sliders locking mech and horn (wiring to) are also common things on the 206.

Make sure all the stalks work fine (known as the coms2000 unit), indicators should self cancel, check all the light option do indeed work correctly, the stalks should be firm with very little movement other than the direction its meant to go (window wipers). Its very common for these to fail over time.

Take it for a drive,to test everything the guys talked about, and since it's a diesel, make sure it runs fine, with no issue, such as power loss or anything like that, diesel leaks in the engine bay, open the doors, look at the plastic plugs that have wires for electric windows, central looking,if there is any cracks or damage, also don't forget to take a magnet with you,to check the paint, and if there was a body damage that got fixed with lots of filler,as the magnet will not stick to that.

When you take it for a spin, the normal temperature should reach 83 degrees ish, leave on tickover a few mins and make sure the fan is coming on, and working properly. Common problems with the relays and resistor corroding.

I just arrived from my journey to buy the car (4 hours coach going and then other 4 coming back). However, I didn't finally buy it because according to my friend's opinion and all of the information you guys gave me it was just crap. That guy just tried to hide all the bad stuff the car had and didn't say anything about it in the ad that he posted; but when my friend started to highlight all the problems, he just shut up and admitted them.

Basically it had oil leaks everywhere, the car made a weird noise when you turned the steering wheel completely to the sides, the gear needed a repair, the front breaks needed to be replaced asap, he turned the car on before we arrived so we wouldn't see how long it takes to turn it on, and just to make everything a little bit worse, the cigarette lighter was missing. There was more bad stuff but I can't remember it right now.

I really wanted a Peugeot 206, but after my friend checked it and gave his opinion I just decided that one wasn't going to be mine. So I'll wait a little bit more to have one Wink

But, anyway, thank you very much for everything guys! Your answers were really helpful! ^o^ And thanks to this lesson I know more about checking cars Rolling On The Floor Laughing
