Hi All,
Just after some advice, my gearbox has started to make a rumbling noise when I lift off the accelerator and coast, however when I put it back under load the noise goes away. I'm thinking that the clutch release bearing is on its' way out. What's everyone else's opinion?
If it is this then I'll replace the whole clutch unit but I need to ask how difficult it is, I have replaced clutches in RWD cars before and found it easy enough and have all the tools. Is there a guide on here somewhere?
Thanks for helping

If it goes away under load could also be the diff in the box on its way out. Had this on my old 1.4
Clutch change on these aren't bad, can be done in a few hours, had to do the clutch on my GTi the other week, took me about 4 & a half hours from the wheels coming off the floor to them coming back down again.

Sounds more like the diff or input shaft bearing has failed tbh

Thanks Guys,
Its not got any worse at the moment and the gearbox operates fine. I'm now thinking that if it is the input shaft bearing then is it easier to replace the whole gearbox instead of just doing the bearing.

Hey guys, I think I am starting to have the same trouble with my 1.4 petrol gearbox. The sound is only there if I am IN gear, and the car is coasting along with the clutch up, and goes away when I press the clutch down.
I am in 2 minds wether or not to get a used gearbox or a reconditioned one. I have been quoted 750 for a reond box with new clutch kit changed out. Or I could buy a cheap 206 with the same engine for 200 and get a garage to swap the box out and scrap the other car when done, but then with a used box, I wouldn't know how long it would last.
Are the diesel boxes more heavy duty right? So would a diesel box fit onto a petrol engine? My car is a 2004 53 plate 1.4 petrol. Is my gearbox a KFU or KFW or KFX? Are all the petrol 1.4 gearboxes interchangable?
