When I got the car the front nearside wheel bearing had failed. I replaced it and my daughter drove the car for 3000 miles. When she returned home I checked the car and the bearing had gone again. Replacing it for a second time my daughter then drove the car for a couple of hundred miles.
A recheck that everything was ok and the bearing has now gone again. I replaced the hub as the original one showed signs of a bearing that had been hammered in. The hub was second hand but had no signs of play and once fitted everything seemed ok.
The steering has always felt stiff so I checked the tracking and found it was at 15mm toe out.
The daughter had driven the car approx 100 miles with the new hub by this point. I retracked the front and drove the car. There was now a very noticeable rumble from the front. Yep the wheel bearing had gone.
I've purchased another bearing and fitted it. I've checked the tracking. I've purchased a new torque wrench and torqued the hub to 325Nm. Taking the car for a drive the rumble was not as loud, but it was still there.
I tried swerving the car from side to side and it makes no difference to the sound. It is definately speed related. If I depress the clutch and coast the noise drops off in relation to speed.
Anyone any idea what can be causing the problem? Question

Hi there,
Brakes binding on a little bit or the wear indicators getting close?
Bent backing plates? Don't know if yours had these but thought it was worth a mention.
Maybe rotate the tyres and see if the noise changes?
Last one; unlikely and i don't know how you would test either but:
Intermediate shaft bearing?
Hopefully the gearbox isn't Fubar'd, sorry i don't have an answer more just hoping to give ideas.

Thanks for responding. I'm going to give it a go over again tomorrow. It soundslike a bearing and I was thinking of the intermediate shaft bearing as its something I haven't checked yet.
Brake pads are nearly new.

Ok. Here's the latest. Jacked the car up on the near side- engaged 1st gear and let it run. Brake pads were catching on the disc and there was a rumble. Stopped the engine and grabbed the wheel. It rocked. I've litterally driven the car 8 miles and it deffinatley feels like the bearing.
The offside is fine - no rumbles and spins freely.
Rotating the near side wheel there is a definate rumble like an osscillation as the disc and pad come into contact once on every revelution.
I can't believe its done a bearing in 8 miles and it wasn't a cheap bearing.
When I fitted the bearing it immediatley sounded like a bearing was too tight.
The car has the bibber diameter spindle on teh drive shaft and has teh locking cap and R clip. I've torqued it down to 325Nm with a new torque wrench so now I'm stumped.

I've now replaced the drive shaft on the nearside. This has made the most difference. the car steers much better and the steering is not so heavy as before. There is no rumble now just what can only be described as a growel.
Again this is speed related. The bearing hadn't gone but the wheel could move. With the new drive shaft there is no play when holding the wheel at top and bottom but there is a small amount of play when holding the wheel at the sides.
Holding the track rod end seems to indicate the play is here theough to the steering rack.
So all I've got to do now is find the source of the growel.

Well, Following a friends advice I tried swapping the rear wheels with the front to see if it was a tyre issue with one of the front tyres. Three of the tyres on the car are Avon ZT5 and the other is some obscure make. The two front tyres are Avon and new. They were only fitted recently.
With the two new Avons on the back and just the one up front the noise reduced considerably. I had to get to a higher speed before the noise was noticeable.
Changing back again to the two Avons on the front and the growel was almost instantly noticeable once driving.
Looks like a tyre related issue. Has anyone else had an issue with Avons? It would be good to here from anyone who is using them on a 2.0 Hdi.

Whether this helps you or not, checked my tyres, 185/65/14 all round, (what are yours) all 4 are different makes, no Avons on though.
Never had wheel bearing problems or noises that you are describing, since owning the car for 8 years.
From what i read wheel bearings rarely go and should outlive the car, (Haynes Manual) are you using a press to fit the bearing. 8 miles, something is amiss.

I've used avons for the last 2 lots of tyre changes. I currently have all 4 wheels with avons.
I. An definatly tell you they are an above average noise tyre.... Meaning they generate I bit of sound whilst driving.
Mine are 185/65/14 and do not rub or catch anything.
I can also state that I've never had any sounds like you say or had any problems with my tyres in general.
Unfortunately I'm guessing my post won't help you that much.

Thanks for the replies gents. I'm still a bit stumped as to the problem. I've been in touch with Avon and I'm waiting a reply. From what you say about using Avons it looks like my problem must be elsewhere.
I need to do a bit more work to the car in the next two weeks (Replace inner track rod to the nearside which is the play I mentioned in an earlier post)
In terms of tyre size I do have smaller tyres on the front. I'm using 175 x 65 to speed up the steering a bit (which they definately do) These are listed as fitting all wheels with a width between 5 and 6". (Peugeot alloy rims are 5.5") They are also the correct speed rating and the load rating is sufficient for the car.
Maybe this is the problem but I don't see why it should be.

I had a response from Avon. They have asked me to return the tyres if I think they are faulty and they will check them.
They also suggest that it might be an alignment issue or suspension that is on the way out.
I've still to do the inner track rod so when I get this done I will see if I can get the chassis aligned.

Well I've changed the inner track rod, and had the wheels aligned. Still the same problem. It weems worse at 50mph and then dies off a bit at 70. This could be that the added wind noise means its less noticeable.
The noise seems to come from the offside front of the car and when I run the car on jacks it is more noteceable with the drivers side wheel off the floor than the passengers.
I've changed the drivers side driveshaft as there seemed to be a bit of play in this, but with a new shaft the noise seemed reduced slightly but is still noticeable.
Things are heading towards the gearbox.....Gulp!

I'm still having problems with the growel to the car.
I've placed a camera under the car. With the front offside wheel off the floor I change through the box up to 30mph. You can hear the growel best after about a minute of video.
The car has two new drive shafts.
Can anyone please advise on what the noise could be?

OK
for anyone in future who listens to the growel in the link above I can tell you it was the front offside wheel bearing.
I took the car to a Peugeot/ Mercedes garage, we put it up on a ramp and listened. - After an lour of chasing noises he gave up and declared he didn't know what it was. We both gripped the wheel in question and rocked it but it was solid. This dismissed the bearing in my mind. Also when you took the car for a run and turned the wheel from side to side the rumble never altered, so again I discounted the bearing.
Once I had done everything else already mentioned I found a long aluminium rod, taped up one end to make a soft end and started working under the car(I kept to the side) and putting the rod to my ear worked from the gearbox to the diff, to the intermediate bearing and finally to the hub. It was then I became convinced it must be the bearing in the hub.
When I took the bearing out of the hub using a frinds 10 tonne press, someone had been there before me. There were pop marks from a drift down both sides of the bearing housing. I've cleaned these up best I can and checked for ovality but only got 0.001" so I put the new bearing in.
DA DA!! no more growel.
The car is nice to drive now, but what a saga.
