My car needs the trailing arm bearings but i decided this is the time to get a new axle since i wanted it lowered. The axle i've found is a GTI one so has the discs, what do i need in order to change from drums to discs? it's also already lowered 30mm would have liked lower but not really complaining. A garage quoted me £90 + vat to change it is that the usual price? Also the axle is about 38 miles each way. Would the car be able to do this needing tailing arm bearings especially carrying a axle on the way back?

Personally i would avoid it, theoritically it would hold together but i dont promise anything.
Why not get a refurbwd one from im axles?

I would not use IM axles for personal issues not to flame the Company here.
I used Axle direct as they are local to me and they Converted my Drum axle to disks and lowered it for me on the day.
They could supply you with an axle to your specifics but usually go of your reg/chassis number to built it to factory specifics. Also they come with a 2 year warranty so no worries for a while.

I went with IM Axle for my new axle on my GTI 180. 2 year warranty and you know its solid!!!
Second hand you have no way of actually tell how the bearing sit when the weight of the car is on it. and nothing to say they will collapse 20 miles down the road :/
Better to be safe and sound =]
And IM Axle also lower it for free if you email them with you order
£90 on the other hand is very cheap to replace the axle I think. Others might say different.
Depends on how mechanical minded you are tho as to weather you change it yourself

I got the axle 2nd hand for £130 lowered and has the discs, Bit of a risk i know but never realized you could get reconditioned axles so cheap i thought they would be a good part of £3-400. The axle is being fitted, dropped the car off at 9am this morning and getting it back some point tomorrow so fingers crossed i haven't bought a dud. It was 90 to fit but now 150 with it being converted to discs and another 50 to fit my front lowering springs so not to bad

The axle was off a 53 plate gti 180. And the mechanic said he had to solder the connections together as the plugs were different, could that be the problem? Not actually tested the ABS to see if it works yet

Wrong ABS sensors then.
Find a better mechanic that isn't a bodger.

So now he's messed up the wiring and sensors!
Hope he didn't totally remove the connectors from the car loom.

I hope not, best of it is hes a well know trusted mechanic in my area but I'm not going back. Especially with what happened with my wheels, my car went in there with alloy wheel bolts and came back out with steel bolts in alloy wheels and i didn't notice and had went through a fair amount of the alloy the bolts were barely holding the alloys on. Glad i noticed when i did but think i will be having a word with him and he better sort something out with my alloys there in really bad shape with the bolts going so far in
Don't worry there's alloy wheel bolts on it now

Axle for a 206 180 .
1.Dont go imaxle ive had a 180 axle 50mm drop & it was on the floor .
2. The toe angle is -20 on the right. Due to the way & angle the pivot bolt has been installed .The bearing sits on it & you attache your wheel .
3. They removed my hand brake cable holders and disk covers. damaged the covers & kept all 13mm bolts & brackets ..
Martin his name promises the world but cannot deliver any quality products..
4. I got a 2nd 206 gti axle same crap..
All cars lazer lined for toe camber caster ect.
waste of time . Very poor results on both axles.
5 .. I got £100 back off paypal for the damage costs & parts they have kept..
Go axle direct + it's cheaper.
also the paints too thin rust shows fast . It's also squeeks when I jack it up . Annoying . But no play rock solid .
