Hi guys my car sometimes displays the stop sign when the temp is in the red and I thought I had a duff thermostat until tonight.

Tonight I watched the temp and as soon as it hits 90 it literally pings immediately to red and displays the stop sign. However while it does this I can hear the fan come on and shortly afterwards the temperature falls to about 85.

Am I right in thinking that the coolant temp sensor needs changing? And that my thermostat must be working fine as my fan is coming on? Cheers guys

Thermostat is nothing to do with the fan. It just controls coolant flow through the radiator. Coolant sensor operates the temp gauge via the ecu. If the ecu thinks the engine is too hot it switches the fan on.

It will be you low speed fan resistor at the front that has failed. About £30 or so

Depending on how small your hand are, what lower grill is fitted & access to a 1/4" socket set, there a doddle to change in about 5 minutes.

Undo the 2 bolts that secure the bottom of the bumper & you can then get your hands up there to extract the resistor, the bumper does give enough once the lower edge is unbolted.

1/4" extension fits through the grill nicely to Laughing

Toyota C-HR GR Sport 2.0 Hybrid with JBL & Alcantara packs.

Low speed fan resistor definitely then? And just to confirm, my car isn't Iver heating? Haha. I'll get it fixed either way as it's very annoying cheers guys

Your engine is fine, its just the britron unit/ECU telling you there is a fault

Ok. Awesome thank you in that case I might fully service my car or buy more urgent parts tomorrow instead of replacing this sensor immediately then haha tar mate much appreciated

first check with multimeter temperature sensor if it shows correct value with temperature. The best is to remove it from the engine and place it in pot with water that slowly raises temperature. The instrument should be in Kiloohm range. Also you will need control thermometer to measure temperature of the water.
iF the water temp. raises than resistance of the sensor must be changed. Observe if the change is continual.
Than using contact spray you can spray wiring (connectors) and apply some vaseline on the contacts.
Those cars have a relay that is mounted on the front plastic. I believe you should remove front grill to access it. Due to corrosion and bad wiring engine can be easily overheated. Check the relay contacts, open the housing and apply contact spray on the relay contacts and wire ends (cable shoes).
