Looking closer it seems to have two flat sides towards the base of the bolt guessing il have to grip these to tighten it

Yeah you use a spanner on the flat bit (like a nut) and then tighten up the bolt. That is the usual way for drop links to be fastened up anyway. Much easier than using an Allen key.

thats what i want to hear Smile been trying to see but every how to is the allen key style. checked my old drop links and the rubber is knackered both sides have split so imguessing/hoping that this solves my problem

Allen key is OK to start with but when removing the droplinks the bolts are often so rusted the Allen shape rounds off so out with the grinder. Flats are a much better design.

I don't think drop links are MOT fail as anti roll bar and associated components are not safety critical element. They can be advisory though.

Well replaced the drop links, not too bad getting the old ones off, doddle getting the new ens on, came to a lovely problem when putting the passenger wheel back on, managed to snap a bolt inside the hub. Luckily came out dead easy with a bolt extractor :). BUT! Knocking noise is still there. Old drops were corroded and split but seems like they weren't the problem Sad any other ideas? On the advisory there was something about ball joint? But the knocking can sometimes be felt in the pedals :S strut problem maybe?

Track rod end or bottom swivel. From your early description my money is on one of the track rod ends. I mean the swivel joint that is closest to each wheel.

Track rod ends best inspected by holding the road wheel at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and twisting the wheel or you look as someone just wiggles (not turn but wiggle) the steering wheel. Bottom swivel is with hands at 6 and 12 o'clock on the road wheel and again twist the wheel.

Or a bit more stringent test lever the joints with a bar though hands provided you aren't a 7 stone weeklong are enough.

Slight update:

changed the drop links nice and easy job......... although managed to snap a wheel bolt in the hub which was annoying. Luckily it cam straight out with a bolt extractor. Found out it was a different type of metal compared to the rest, it was a lot shinier than the others. anyway drop links weren't to blame it was the wishbone. Brought a set from ebay and had both replaced and boom noise has gone!!! Smile looks like it might have been the lower suspension ball joint which did have play in it.

anyway onto the next fault which is a spluttering exhaust so yeah lol one more problem solved Smile
