Hi.

My 206 is a 54 1.4 Petrol, recently its been very juddery when starting from cold, but this juddering goes away once warm, its started today, fine with its slight judder however, on my way home the car began shaking and juddering a lot, the engine when idle is shaking and there's a popping coming from the exhaust.

Now I know the centre pipe to the back box has a small blow on it, not too loud but you can hear it, the popping from the exhaust isn't popping rhythmically, it seems quite random.

When stationary and I accelerate it sounds like a lawnmower and the engine shakes quite a bit.

When I put it in gear and pull away, the engine will stall, unless I increase the revs above what usually is required, and when it does pull away, there isn't any power at all

The spark plugs are Bosch and where replaced approximately 3 years ago, the engine oil and filters are replaced regularly (every six months)

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Any sign of cross contamination in the oil or coolant?

The coolant is very dark, looks like pond water..

But there isn't any oil/water butter around the oil fill cap.

Head gasket has gone and the contents of the cylinder is being forced into the coolant. A sniff test will confirm.

I thought that might be the case.. How can this be repaired?

Only way to do it is to take the head off, get it skimmed and then replace the gasket. Mine went in a similar fashion a couple of months ago. Hardest part was getting the head to the engineers for a skim..

Cost about £160 in total, but you could probably add a couple of hundred if you went to a garage.

Thanks for the info Macca, really appreciate your input.

Looks like this will be my first time at replacing a gasket as well.

Are there any good tutorials/how to's on doing this to a TU3JP, I found lots of info, but an idea of the process and important things to be aware of would be handy, I have a Haynes but its more or reference really..

There is a youtube video knocking about. If you've never done a head before, probably worth watching.

Haynes is good for reference, but best advice is to allow yourself plenty of time. If in doubt, take photographs of everything in place before removing it, this way you hav a reference on where everything goes back to. Having done both Ford Crossflow and Pinto, and Austin A series heads in the past, this was relatively straight forward.

::UPDATE::

I've replaced the head gasket, water pump, timing belt and drive belt in an effort to fix the issue.

It turns out the reason I had the original problem was because I put diesel in, instead of petrol. (£10 into an almost empty tank)

I drained the diesel and added petrol through the system, upon investigation, the injectors where 'spitting' fuel and not a fine spray, this meant that it was over fueling, and while running, when it would holding the idle, the CAT started to glow orange and the engine continued to misfire so the injectors have been replaced, along with the spark plugs.

The car is still running very lumpy, and noisy, the CAT still glows orange and the engine will not idle without me holding the accelerator to 2000rpm, there's no power past 3rd and misfires all the time, there is also a loud 'Tsst' sound when the engine dies.

Compression tests on all cylinders have good readings, spark plugs are brand new Bosch (same as old ones)

I am lost now as to what the issue could be and could really do with some advice from you guys.

You dived straight in and did the head gasket? Did you even plug the car into a diagnostic tool?

To be honest the gasket was way passed it's prime and needed to be replaced, so initially that was my first thought.

Replaced coil pack, CAT and lambda sensors and shes running normally now ..
