This is my final roll of the dice. If I cant fix this problem, my misses is going to force me to sell the 206 and sadly it will more than likely become parts Sad

From PP2000, the fault is:
Airbag ECU
Permanent fault. Configuration error.

the airbag warning light is displayed and stays lit when the ignition is turned on and then shows up as "airbag fault" in the centre display when the car is started.

The car is a 2003 muxed 206 gti with no modifications. So far I have tried the following:
-connections under the seat
-a new battery
-an airbag ECU
-3 different comms2000 units, tried a reset
-a new rain sensor
-changing the configuration in pp2000
-BSI reset

If I remove the 5 wire grey connector from the comms unit before I turn on the ignition, I don't get the fault. Actually I have isolated this to a single green wire in that connector, which comes from the BSI. If I remove this wire from the comms2000, there is no fault, but also no lights or wipers.

has anyone ever come across anything like this?? you guys are my last hope.

Haven't dealt with 206 specific airbag system yet... But sounds like earth fault which could be collision sensor wiring, cable rotation mechanism (between steering wheel and column) and possibly seat belt tensioners are also monitored by the same system...?

And check your passenger airbag on/off lock yet? Dirt or moisture in that maybe?

Sounds like a confiquration error in either the bsi or airbag ecu

Print screen what the confiq is

My GTi 180 got permanent faults on two driver airbag triggers, I cleared the faults and the message is now gone from central console.

Surely I'll have to just drive around and the fault -might- come back.. One way to find out, but car is SORNed for the time being Smile

thanks for the replies. BSI has not been sent away, but does not show any faults in PP2000. car was lying up for a year and was then jump started. would that lead to a BSI airbag issue??

As far as sensors go, I thought for a muxed pug, the only sensors were in the airbag ECU (under ashtray) and 2x sills (satellites), let me know if this is not the case.

screen grabs are below. Last one is a pic of a plug behind passenger side sus turret that's not connected to anything. Just wondering if this is normal?? think it was where crash sensor was in pre-muxed 206??

Configuration error means something is disabled but plugged in or enabled and missing (faulty).

It says absent for passenger airbag neutralisation switch but do you have one anyway?

Disconnect your drivers airbag, both connectors green and blue, configure it as absent in pp2000, and go for a drive to see if the fault is still there.

Also does your horn work ok?

I don't have a passenger airbag neutralisation switch and the horn works fine. I have tried disconnecting all the airbags and altering the configuration to suit. I still get the same fault.
If I disconnect an airbag, but leave it as present on pp2000, I get the usual airbag short circuit fault and also the configuration error fault.
The only way the fault does not show up is if I turn on the ignition with the sidelights or headlights switched on....... Wall Bang

A 2003 model should have the switch fitted, it's like a key hole to the right of the steering wheel. It's a safety feature so that you can fit a rear facing baby seat in the front of the car. If this is missing, it might be a good place to start looking for a fault.

Its an aussie spec, so 100% no airbag switch. It even has the different warning sticker to not fit a rear facing baby seat in the front of the car.

I did find a connector (in the pic below) behind the BSI. It wasn't connected to anything. Anyone know what its for??
If it would normally be for the airbag switch, then I'm going to check it for a short....

Do you have curtain airbags above the side doors too?

based on Macca's post, I added the passenger airbag switch to the configuration (even though it didn't come that way from the factory), and finally I don't get a configuration error.
I now get some passenger airbag faults instead so at least I am looking in the right spot. Again I get a different fault depending on what position the headlight stalk is in when the ignition is turned on.

Headlights off I get this:

Sidelights or headlights on, I get this:

Any ideas how the passenger airbag switch would be wired?? Or what they did for cars without the switch like mine??

thanks for all the help so far guys.......

Have you put a resistor in the airbag wiring to the ecu side? Google the resistance (poss) 2 ohms, then see if the fault clears

No water ingress in the BSI? Connectors all okay on bsi?

If you have tried another airbag ecu that could be the ongoing cause of the configuration error, particularly if it wasn't exactly the same.

If it was my car I would just just unplug the airbag ecu and snap out the airbag led's from the instrument cluster to pass the mot Very Happy

The airbag fault message on the screen is NOT an mot failure, only the light is but if it doesnt light up its passed, this was told to me by my mot guy when i had ongoing airbag nightmares and was his advice how to get round it.
