hi all, having a problem with my 206 which seems to be baffling people.
when i accelerate the steering goes awful car starts veering to the right and when i let off it goes to the left. i have had new wishbones and drop links the car has been on ramps and everything tested and all seems to be as it should be, suspension is old but still fine . i have had a refurbished back axle from imaxle not long back so that has been done also. the only play underneath the car is on the lower rear engine mount were the gearbox / driveshaft goes through. it is running on 17" alloys and ha sbeen for a while with no problems also hubcentric spacers .. the gearbox and clutch are on there way out also i think as there is a ticking noise when i drive. thrust bearing has been noisy for a while and clutch seems to be slipping also.been quoted 425 to fix that with refurbished gearbox and new clutch with warranty etc. could this affect it ?
thanks in advance for any help given and please don't tell me to bin it as i have thrown enough money into car to keep it on the road and i cannot afford another haha ... merry christmas

It would be very unlikely for a Diff to cause that much drag/resistance to cause a pull but I have seen it in the past.
Have you tried changing the wheels to the other side of the car and see if that makes any difference? It could be a Tyre collapsing internally.

When I had that on a CC it was the lower arm bushes ... Too soft because some tw@t sold me standard not GTi arms. Lasted a few weeks so swapped them out again.
Expensive lesson as supplier maintained they were right fitment.

I had a diesel that was doing this and i spent hundreds trying to fix it. In the end the cause of mine was the driveshafts. The garage said it had a massive amount of "end float" in both shafts.

now christmas is out they way i am going to swap these wheels to my old ones see if it is the tyre.. i have replaced both wishbone amd drop links it is only standard anyway its not a gti the drop links do seem thin maybe this is right .. and drive shafts havent been checked yet do you know if there is a way i can check them please ?

considering a second hand engine and box is it easy enough to stick a 2.0 litre instead of my 1,6 16v tuj5p4 nfu

Why? How about actually solving the problem?
Higher insurance? Probably different ecus needed?

because its as cheaper for an engine with a gearbox than it is to get box and clutch sorted. also 2 litre might as well upgrade it a bit if new engine was going in. i have tried to solve the problem mate its really doing my head in lol. so have several garages hence i am on here asking advice from people like yourself who own them and have had experience. higher insurance isn't much of a problem and diffo ecus would be solved by getting full package ecu loom etc when getting engine.. only thing i have not tried yet is some more wishbones but like you say the people i got them off say they are right and car does feel solid underneath with no play on anything.
a few month back my power steering sensor the blue one had cracked and was leaking i replaced that and topped fluid up. do you need to bleed that system afterwards could this be the cause months after ?

i replaced wishbone with the proper ones as you said and put new tyres on my normal alloys it seems to have cured it. thank you for the advice.
next car is going into back garden being fixed, clutch / hopefully not gearbox. just about to look on here for a guide to clutch
