I've just got anothr 206. A 2003 1.4 8v GLX. It drives reasonably well considering the 93k on the clock. Today on the way to work I noticed that at high revs (Around 3k) there was a rattling noise. It sounded like a rattling interior trim panel. My passenger grabbed the gear stick and it stopped until he released it.
So my question is, what would cause this? I'm naturally assuming gear linkages as there is a little play in the gear stick when it is in gear (probably only a cm or so). What steps would need to be taken to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

I guess the noise could probably be better described as a mechanical buzzing. Just 2 components vibrating against eachother.

You might have a wear out gearbox or maybe engine mount bush, they usually when broken make the engine sound travel to the compartment.

Hi, thanks for your help.
How would I best go about diagnosing the issue?

sorry for my late reply, but best way to diagnose this,is by having a look at it using a lift,or you can let someone put first gear on,and have hand break on,and try to move the car forward without moving of course, and watch the engine movement, and also do the same with Reverse,if the engine move so much, then you need to replace it.

Thanks for your reply. Sadly the car had a less than ideal meeting with the central reservation before I had chance to fix this. RIP little puggy. On the bright side I've got a garage full of spare parts now!
