Hi Guys

Just a quick question.

We have had our Pug for a bout 2 years now, we bought it for the summer but use it a lot. When we first got it I noticed it made a bit of a howling noise when slowing down with the gearbox, when slowing down whilst engine breaking. We initially thought this was a problem with the gear box so we had it replaced, as well as the clutch and clutch forks, seals etc. It sounded exactly the same with the new box and clutch in so we took it back to the garage (who we trust) and they replaced the gearbox for a new one again.... same noise. The garage said it must be a normal sound of the car. The noise goes away when you press the clutch in so it is definately from gearbox. It is only very faint when engine breaking and does not really bother us.. the car drives fab. Just a bit intrigued to know what it is, I have read stuff about gear lash etc but just wondered if anyone else has a similar noise. Many thanks, it's a great forum.

Hey Nick,

I don't think I have experienced this sound to be honest. I will pay attention to it when I take it for a spin again (next week Friday). Might make a recording for you. Me mum can hold the phone for me.

Sorry I cannot be more helpful right now Sad

It's called the gearbox whine, do a search and see if it is exactly your case.

A bit difficult to diagnose without hearing the actual noise. However, if the noise goes when depressing the clutch it could be the thrust race/bearing running slightly all the time against the fingers and quietening when pressed, or, the spigot bearing at the rear of the flywheel.
