The spring that returns the key to "Running" position after "Starting", broke. Now I start the car and manually turn the key back a little, to the Running position. I ordered a set of ignition switch/keys from ebay, replaced the old ignition switch but the car won't start (immobilizer?). Installing again the old ignition switch, car starts fine.
I noticed the old switch has a magnet on the side of the barrel, the new one doesn't. I don't know if this makes any difference or even if I get an ignition switch with magnet.
Any suggestions or workaround?

The black transponder immobiliser aerial clips around the outside of the barrel.

Did you transfer this across to the replacement barrel?

Also the immobiliser chip inside your original key / keys needs to be transferred across to the replacement key / keys else the immobiliser wont disarm.

You could have just ordered a replacement ignition barrel from any Peugeot main dealer cut to the original key - normally takes 2 weeks to come from France.

I did place the black ring over the barrel just as it was but the chip from the original key cannot be transferred because the new key is solid.
I wonder, if I break the plastic part of the new key and replace the blade of the old key with that (or make one at a key shop). Also, the old barrel has a magnet visible on the side which (I think) activates the immobilizer switch. The new barrel does not have a magnet but just a slot with something like steel wool in it.

Any ideas how much Peugeot charges for a replacement ignition barrel?

The immobiliser chip you require is inside your original key.

The only other way would be code the new keys to the car.

You need suitable diagnostic equipment OR Peugeot Planet & the 4 digital alphanumeric security code for the car.

If you don't have the code any Peugeot main dealer can supply it BUT they will ask to see your photo ID & proof of ownership for the car before issuing you the security code.

Photocard licence / pass port & V5C registration document will do.

There is BUT it will also invalidate the theft cover on your insurance.

Would be easier to fix the problem correctly.

I care less about the theft cover, all I want is to disable the useless (to me) immobilizer crap rather than paying a little over 1,000 euro to the dealership, for an ignition barrel, just because it is "blessed" by Peugeot!

Find someone with Peugeot Planet & code the new keys to the car.

That is the most cost effective way of sorting the problem.

In other words, I will have the original key housing, with electronics (transponder), except the blade which will be the new one.

That should work. The new blade only makes it so you can physically turn the lock and close the switches in the ignition [and make the starter turn].
The electronics in the key [case], tied to the car, being seen, will let it actually fire up.

Update.
In order to test the above idea without disassembling key cases, I replaced the ignition barrel with the new one and placed the old key next to the immobilizer ring. Turning the new key started the car right up! Obviously, it needs to have the coded chip (in old key case/holder) in the proximity of the immobilizer ring. Permanently taping the old key there can solve to problem but I need it to open my car's doors, lol.
The next step was to replace the old key blade with the new one. Removing the old blade was no problem as it has a screw which you remove to replace the battery (remote electric door opener). After the screw is removed, you can just pull the key blade and it comes off easily. The new key though, because there in nothing in it, the plastic holder is molded on it so I used a torch to melt the plastic off. The new blade was a little longer than the old one so I cut it with a saw and also drilled a whole where the screw goes through.
I placed the new modified blade in the old key casing, replace the screw and started my car!
