Hi all,

I went to start my car today for the first time in a week after all this snow and my dad noticed a whirring sound coming from the area of the power steering pump.

You can only really notice this when it is idling. I turned the steering wheel slowly to full lock left and right and it did improve very slightly but there is still a whirring sound there which I have posted a link to on youtube to help out.

Peugeot 206 whirring

After this I checked the power steering fluid level, which was at a sufficient level according to the haynes manual (just below 'C' on the dipstick). It also had no air bubbles in it.

I have only really noticed it today when he pointed it out so I have no idea how long its been like that, can't hear it from inside the car.
New cambelt fitted about 18 months ago as well.

He said it could be bearings in the pump itself?

Any ideas anyone?

If you are lucky, it might be an idler pulley rather than the pump. Was on a different car but i had something similar with air con pump, it ended up being the idler which saved me quite a bit of money!
I'd touch the pump when its running (fingers away from the belt) and see if its vibrating at all in a frequency like the noise its making. You could also (with the engine off) spray the different pulley shafts with WD40, run it to see if it makes a difference. Do them one at a time to see if you can work out which one. Chances are it is your pump though if youve already noticed a change in noise when moving the steering.

thanks for your reply, I will try that.

It has also been suggested to replace the power steering fluid so I plan to to try this as well.

The Haynes manual says it takes Total Fluide LDS but when I found this on Amazon it states that it is for suspension systems and only for Citroens.

I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere as to what power steering fluid it takes.

I have some Halfords (PSF) but dont think it is suitable.

Just trying to eliminate everything else before I have to take it to the garage.

i put PSF in mine (a GTI), never had any issues with it. just had a search on Google (in case i've been using the wrong stuff!) and the page below indicates you only need the LDS for cold climate for any 206, otherwise Dexron 2 is ok and the PSF is pretty much Dexron i'd thought, could be wrong though. You cant mix the two types the post says, but that shouldnt be a problem if you are draining the old stuff out.

So I changed the fluid with PSF. The power steering itself still feels fine, no obvious leaks either.

It hasn't made any difference to the sound however. It's going to my local garage tomorrow so hopefully they can diagnose the issue.
