next, after investigating why i cannot start my car, i saw a disconnected cable on the passenger side footwell under the glove box.
what is this for and should it be connected? im pretty sure I have not pulled this out at any point and the car has been working fine for years?? (if this is the battery connection, then i guess this answers all my queries!)

Brake switch. With if not mounted so it's depressed by the linkage (on a RHD car) the brake lights will be constantly on (though I believe they would shut off with the car, but not 100% positive)

@mtempsch - thanks for this info. Basically this cable connects my brakes to the rear brake light then? (Not sure what you mean by "it's depressed by the linkage")
So this definitly needs to be connected into the left hole in my photo?
Could the disconnection be the reason I have a flat battery?

Yes it needs to be in that hole, no it won't be the cause of the flat battery.
The most likely causes of a flat battery are external equipment (incorrectly wired stereo, non-factory fitted alarm etc), or the alternator not topping up the battery when you're using the car.

great thanks VorTechS, Im going to jump start tonight with it plugged in and see what happens.
It seems to be in too firm to have been accidentally popped out, so im thinking git has maybe been disconnected intentionally by a mechanic. Could there be a reason?

It would if the brake lights have been on .. a lot of brake switches work but pushing away from the switch so if it was hanging loose, it would be in circuit and the brake light bulbs on ..

206 brake lights only work when the ignition is switched ON.
It's Japanese stuff where brake lights work without the ignition

ah. ok. Any reason a mechanic would have disconnected this? (to combat faulty lights/wiring etc)

In all honesty, it could have just been knocked whilst someone was working behind the centre console, removing the glovebox (for access to things like the coolant pipe that site inside the cabin) and it is surprisingly easy for someone to kick it off. It really doesn't take much to knock it out of its hole.
