Appears the 1.4 HDi has sprung a coolant leak ...

It seems to be coming from inside the catalytic convertor heat/insulation cover .... anyone know what's behind that apart from the exhaust??

So lots of coolant/water where it shouldn't be but no obvious sign where it is coming from ...

 


But this didn't look right ... (re-filled with de-ionised water as it was low)

 



But pressure cap was also kn@ckered (replaced) ... dried off engine as much as I could and ran engine ... and no leaks ... errrrr???

I used to have the same car model as you Gazza.
Never had a problem with the coolant cap but on the last picture of your expansion tank it looks like the coolant spilled over and down the plastic tank itself.
It is a little bit blurred though so I just see murky coloured coolant around the filler area mostly.
The expansion bottle is easy enough to lift up and check underneath by undoing the retaining bolts.
Check for cracks all around it and also tell tale leaking signs which will hopefully help you identify the source.

Failing that get the car up to normal temperature, jack it up at the front, start the engine and just try and see where it is leaking.
Often the leaks are where there is a join in the pipes or where the pipes meet the bottom/top hoses of the radiator so check all your jubilee/Peugeot clips are secure.

How much coolant had you lost by the way as a small leak will only lose a little coolant over a period of time?
My car had a low coolant sensor so yours should have too which will alert you if it gets very low.

Cooling system pressure test would be a good idea if you cant find the leak the old fashioned way.

Turns out it was a hole in a core plug (or welch plug) in the cylinder head behind the exhaust manifold. Only taken about 6 hours to get enough parts off to find it ... book says 9.5 hours to change head gasket .. can't see how ... it would take that to get the engine stripped to get to the head!!! Smile

See my other post for progress ... and yes it has taken me nearly 9 months to get to this stage ... I've been busy ok!?!?!
