Warning light - Catalytic converter blowing?

Hello,

A warning light came on yesterday while driving: “engine fault - have the vehicle repaired”

I took it straight to Halfords and they ran a diagnostic test and said that the catalytic converter is blowing and causing the fault.

They quoted ~£500 for a replacement.

I phoned around and a local garage have said they will do it for £389

Since I’ve got the car back the warning light has now gone.
I’ve driven around a bit and it’s definitely not coming back on.

Should I replace the cat anyway, Or should I wait until the MoT in a couple of months and see if the emissions fails?

What engine? It could be either of the Lambda sensors getting tired more than the cat, unless by "blowing" they mean there's a hole in the cat? (slightly unusual terminology if they mean failing internally, blowing usually means there's a hole & holes can usually be welded up.

It’s a 1.2 petrol.

Do you think I should just take it to another garage and get a second opinion?

I would, yeah. Could be they just put it in "layman's" terms (most of us think of exhaust issues as "blowing") but can't hurt to have another pair of eyes over it.

Specifically I'd ask them (if it's not holed) what the upstream Vs downstream lambda sensor readings look like & if the heaters are working as they should.

Not sure which engine you mean by 1.2 though, AFAIK the UK spec 206s only came with 1.1 or 1.4 in the smaller engine sizes then 1.6 and 2.0. If it's a 1.1 I may have a good used cat and both lambda sensors available from the engine swap project, whereabouts are you based?

If you are thinking of trusting Halfords, then YES!

Take it to an independent exhaust fitter .. they will be best to advise you
