Hello, I've helped a friend fix some issues with their 206 estate (2003 model).

They told me that the dashboard lights had gone off, the trip counter had reset itself and various lights weren't working.

When I looked the rear indicators were causing the tail lights to flash on and off so I immediately said "earth fault". I inspected all of the front and rear lighting and eventually found that the earth pin the rear right cluster had corroded away. I made a bypass wire for the earth which didn't fix the issues.
We got to the stage where the indicators worked if the headlights were on. if the headlights were off then the indicators would flash about 4 times and then stop working.

I spoked to a local garage and they told me to replace the entire rear lighting connector. Today I did that. We then went through various phases of lights working and not working. Eventually we got to the stage where the indicators and all rear lights now work properly. We are left with an intermittent fault where the dashboard display turns itself off after about a minute. It did this about 4 times in a row. We then started the engine and it didn't do this. We then tried it with the engine off and it was also fine.

I'm very confused. I believe there's a lighting control ECU which might have finally reset itself so that everything works. We also noted that the "pollution fault" warning which has been there for months has now gone.

Does any of this sound familiar? I wonder if there's still an earth fault somewhere, I've read that the gearbox to chassis strap can fail. I couldn't see when I had a quick look, so some tips on where it is would be useful.

Thanks.

Location: What's it to you? ? ?

Behind each front headlamp there is a loom earth connection on to the chassis - these are known to cause issues with the lights.

It would be worth removing both earth bolts behind the headlamps & cleaning the earth ring terminals.
