Hey all,
Purchased a lovely '05 206cc 1.6 16v back in October.
What a beauty...but that's all!
(Feel free to check the MOT history!)
Total problem car - So far...
Floor welded and patched
Refurb axle from Imaxle
Replaced rear shocks
Both rear callipers replaced & handbrake cables replaced
Clutch done and gearbox oil leak rectified
Both wishbones, drop links & track rod ends done.
Oil and filters done.
As a side note, the alloys lights ect were the prior owner's purchases - I have the original alloys ( 15" Vortex alloys I believe? Always forget the alloy names! ) The aftermarket alloys are 16" with 205 / 45 tyres fitted. Lassa DriveWays - 7mm tread remaining on rear, 4mm on front, equal wear on all four tyres.
Done about 560 miles since the front end was done and about 800 since the axle was put on.
I'm left with some lovely issues - I've done some searching and dug up more than a few possibilities, so I'm really just wondering if anyone has experienced the same issues or can suggest what the most likely causes actually are.
Starting at the rear -The rear end is really ,really noisy. Started off with a banging noise - I think this was the exhaust as it seems to have vanished, unless it is just being drowned out. Currently, it is a metal-on-metal like screeching sound, while driving or pushing down on rear end. The noise vanishes for a time if the car has sat overnight, but returns if rocked from the back end or jacked up. ( or in one case, after hitting a pothole. ) This sounds to me to be coming from the nearside rear.
My guess - the arm bearing is dry already ? or ,rear beam moving - I hope not, that coming loose by itself is a scary thought.
Next up...
The steering seems to be going - not sure if it is the steering rack, a problem with suspension, or the PAS.
Long story short - Bought the car, steering very heavy, drifts to right at speed. Replaced parts as per above, still heavy, tracking done - still slight drift to right at speed. Took her down a horrible access road - the steering started getting light then heavy again. Sat overnight , now light almost all the time, much closer to my 206SW Difference before was like driving a van vs a toy car!
But, the wheels seem to track into bumps, and the steering likes to snatch sideways suddenly - very unpleasant when doing 30 around a roundabout and it suddenly tries to make me take my exit at an angle that would put me into a signpost. At motorway speeds the steering is somewhat twitchy, making for a very unpleasant drive - this seems to have gotten worse as it was alright when the wishbones ect. were fitted as the next again day I did a run up to Aviemore in a storm, with no issues!
At slow speeds and gently driven it isn't unmanageable but the tracking into bumps and jerking the wheel feels somewhat off - I expect this to a degree but it is happening with quite some force.
I'm putting this down to a failing PAS system atm - i remember it being particularly noisy with the bonnet open.
The car is going in for a "free suspension check" tomorrow, by the ever useless Halfords. (mcconechys as it used to be in this case... )
I have little faith in that and I'm rapidly running out of money and the will to fix this car! Any suggestions would be very much appreciated - even links to stuff I may have missed while searching!

TBH, this car sounds like its always going to be a money pit. Up to you how far you go with it, but may be worth getting rid of! I know personal situation doesnt always make this possible, but you could be throwing money one thing after another. Unless you capable of doing these things yourself, and dont mind the challenge!

It's really starting to feel like it - everything so far, I've been able to do on the drive with help, thankfully!
Alas, personal situation is pretty much stopping me getting rid - I can't get insured on my other car now?! - Thrown a lot of money at it so far, but it was bought cheap(ish...).
Halfords suspension check didn't go ahead - they had to shut due to Covid.
Booked for National on Thursday instead - but some further investigation has flagged up some.. cheaper possibilities of what the causes are. The noise from the near is, of all things, the handbrake! Apparently my adjustment is no good - which I did know...
Front end /seems/ fine - other than the offside spring... which can be pretty easily compressed by hand, having had someone else drive the car and say the steering seems fine overall I'm hoping the spring is the cause. Otherwise I see a lot of calls to Adrien Flux to try and get the other motor insured!
Learning more about 206's on this car in 2 months than in 12 months with the SW...!

Top mounts will likely need a change, definitely if they are the original ones.

Yeah, I've seen. Wouldn't let them actually work on my car...Particularly after that horror story! Thanks for the warning though! Personally went off halfords after they fitted my mate's headlight bulbs incorrectly 3 times in a row ! I was just taking advantage of the freebie suspension check, plus it being a Mcconechys I trust them a little more than a normal autocenter...

I'll take a look into that, thanks! - totally overlooked 'em. Probably doesn't help that the nearside shock has been changed and the offside looks to be original. Bet both top mounts are original....
Goes in to national tomorrow for their freebie check , I had been going to slap the steelies from the SW on to test how badly the tyres are affecting understeer but it's a bit wet out.
Quick test last night shows the bumping and snatching feel is partly due to me hitting the same bumps every time on certain turns. Changing my angle of approach removes that and just leaves me with awful understeer
Taking a car in for suspension checks two days before xmas - really I must be going mad!

Well. I lost a bottom rear shock bolt on the offside... That may explain most of my problems!! Can't believe I didn't notice... Time to see if another bolt in has fixed all the issues!

To update - Yes, that solved all problems other than bad tyres!
Back end still noisy as anything though - and no one can figure out why!

The 1.6 16v CC's 15" alloy wheels called Sirocco:)

Give exhaust a good wiggle. Missus' CC is rattling due to exhaust's kink rubbing against the nearside reinforcement bar, very hard to get that right especially after custom exhausts mods:) (will update the project thread on those)
Another thing could be rear shocks fitted dry? Have someone rock the back of the car whilst you being underneath to source the damn noise.

I'll try to remember that one! I ended up fitting the Sirocco's , only to find the super bouncy rear end plus awful tyres and some misjudgment took me into a kerb - buckled one wheel! Picked up a set - centerless ones ( what a mistake that was!!! ) and got avons on em. Car's now been parked up for months - even with the nice tyres, and taking things slow, there's something awful up with the handling, that plus the seat adjustment latch broke so its currently jammed rearmost position with a bolt. I did make an attempt at selling just to get rid of the problem , but no luck there!
Out of work due to health just now so I guess it's just going to sit as a project car - very annoying really.
Knowing me I probably used copper grease on the threads but forgot to lube the rear shocks... that would do it! I can't remember if it's still making the noise - one of the last things to go wrong was the exhaust snapping and the backbox dangling loose. Hairline crack right at the hanger most likely... Can't say it sounded great driving 90 miles home with no backbox fitted.
I bet getting that bend in the exhaust right must be a nightmare - the reinforcement bars do get in the way a bit!
Last drive of the car more than a few feet I found that when pushing the car - up to redline, aggressive shifting ect it suddenly became very difficult to control. I've been putting my issues down to the rear end but maybe it's been top mounts all along!

You have got the correct front lower arms? When we bought our CC it was obvious it had had a dodgy MOT! So I replaced the brake discs/pads, fitted new tyres, new exhaust, replaced the coil-pack (random misfire) and gave it a good service to make it "safe" for my daughter who was going to drive it.
It was when I was giving it an "Italian tune-up" I noticed it would torque-steer ... A LOT!!
It wasn't the tyres now as I'd thrown the old Accelera's out and fitted Hankooks. So it was really grippy.
It was when it as up on stands I noticed that the lower arm bushes looked split .. and they were!! I replaced them with new GTI arms and what a difference. TBH probably new standard arms would have been an improvement but the lower arms on the car when we bought it, according to an invoice in the glove box, were only two months old!! And most of those two months were sitting on a dealer's forecourt!!
(Obviously been sitting waiting for a muppet like me to buy it .. although I did get a huge wedge knocked off due to all the faults I found .. and maybe mentioned VOSA under my breath! There wasn't anything that wasn't easily fixed so saw it as a challenge!)
Check those lower arms .. (that is the job on a 206 I hated most!)

I think so ! - ebay specials though. ( www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170999707951 )
I'll give the bushings a check when I'm next at the car - fitting them was a massive pain. If they're done in I'll be taking a right hissy fit...probably replace the bolts at same time!! It was totally fine when they were done, right after the clutch was done... could actually make sense for them to be the failure point there...
Thanks for the thought there , knowing my luck it might be just that...!

Had similar misfortune with 2.0 HDi -- the two wishbones were odd! Bushes were intact, but one very aftermarket came with a stiffer bushes visibly different from the other, but only after 2nd look.
Car used to pull to the right whenever I'd put my foot down because if this, motorway nightmare it was especially on/off the exits.

Having burnt though most of the stale e10 in the car - something is wrong with the power steering, and the left front strut. Power steering feels like it's barely working - heavy as anything, then randomly goes very light and twitchy and the car squirrels about and feels very uncontrolled - only for a few seconds at a time and its very bad on poorly surfaced roads ( around Edinburgh, that's all of them...)
If hitting a speed bump at the right angle and speed the left strut seems to just give up a, makes a horrendous bang and a jarring impact through the whole car.
One rear brake was sticking off, a good smack with a bar fixed that - i guess i'll take all the calipers off and clean and grease em, maybe a spot of paint as well.
I've missed driving it, but it feels like such a pig around corners just now. 100% I'd rinse it in the accord .. which well, a over 1.5 tonne diesel estate shouldn't be able to rinse a 206 on a b road, ever!
Edit - oh, and the roof seal is holding water - seeps in and then drips in on the passenger seat but only when cornering or hitting a bump!
Edit #2 - One steering boot was off, lot of dirt got in, cleaned and regreased and flushed the power steering fluid out... steering is slightly improved , but still insanely heavy - even with the car in the air. Get about 45 degreees from center where it's light and then its fighting it - steering rack failure is my port of call there I figure!
