Hi all,

I've been suffering with an issue this week that I can't seem to get to the bottom of.

It's my 206, 1.4 HDi, Year 2006 as seen in my project car page for it.

Last week, I went to the car and it wouldn't start, turn the key in the ignition to the starter motor position and all you would hear is a relay click and it wouldn't turn over. The battery was fine, none of the signs of a flat battery. Car had worked fine just a few hours before this, just completely spontaneous. Tried a few things (checking fuses, reading any codes on pp2000 etc) but nothing made a difference.

I replaced the starter motor on sunday (4 days ago) and when i went to go start it, the same thing happened but after trying the key about 5 more times, it just started no problem? I started the car repeatedly after this and it worked first try every time. Doubtful that I had solved the actual issue but thought I'd use the car and see if had gone away.

Halfway on the morning commute on monday, the battery light came on with 'battery charge fault' on the display, I had noticed that the wipers were very slow already before this. In a slight panic, turned off the headlights, any other draining accessories etc and the light went away.

At the time I thought, I had repeatedly started the car testing the starter motor yesterday, maybe I flattened the battery a bit and the car was struggling to charge it and run the accessories at the same time :/

The next two days, car worked fine, no errors but i had noticed that while you were driving, the blower motor might suddenly get a bit more powerful without touching the speed and the wipers would sometimes be slow and other times be back to normal speed, as if the alternator was working sometimes but not other times and come back etc but no battery light?

Today is thursday, The car had the 'battery charge fault' and battery light appear twice on the commute this morning but went away when I turned off the accessories. This evening as I right this post, I just out to the car to give my sister a lift to the train station and it wouldn't start again, back to the starter click noise. (my confidence of the car working and being stranded somewhere is obviously concerning to me)

Doubt the alternator is faulty since I replaced it just under a year ago (spilt water on it, smoke came of it so I broke the original one if you were wondering) but is a possibility that could have died. The starter motor was replaced and the likelihood of two just 'dying' in a week is very low. I'm not sure what else it could be, the wiring looked fine when I was fitting the new starter and the charging system in the Haynes manual looks quite simple so not sure what's causing all this.

Sorry for the long post, will leave a short summery below:

Car wouldn't start, single click, not battery
Changed starter, didn't work at first but started working
Battery light has appeared 3 times in a few days of driving
Alternator seems to be working sometimes?
Back to car won't start, single click (relay?)

Not sure if related, but P1351 appearing on engine ecu.

(when i turn the key to the starter motor position, the bsi sees a drop of voltage from 12v to 1.5v and then back to 12v when i take the key back to ignition)

Disregarding most everything here, as i seem to be too tired to take it in ! Shocked , is the ground/battery neg good? They seem to be very prone to corrosion from what i've seen. When I had issues I tested by running a jump lead from engine lift point to the neg - this was on a 1.4 8v petrol though. Solved all problems so put a cable in place permanently. I only suggest it because it's easy to overlook!

Small update:

Didn't really suspect the battery since there wasn't any warning signs since it was fine and then suddenly it was so dead it couldn't even turn over the car but was enough for the dash lights to stay on.

Anyway, I put one of those battery jump pack things on the battery and it was just enough to turn the car over but not to start. Put in a different battery and the car has been working fine all day, multiple trips, no other issues, working flawlessly, alternator putting out 13.9v and the battery is at 12.85v after the car is shut off.

Fingers crossed problem doesn't come back in the coming days like last time.

Also earth cable is fine, as well as my extra one I added last year since I've heard they can go.

Thats a slightly low output for your alternator. Will keep the battery charged, but when running lights heaters etc, may cause a drain on your battery slowly.

I would prefer to see 14v+ but I haven't had any issues with battery getting drained with the heavy load systems being on. Had the replacement battery a week so far, no issues have reappeared.
