Hi. We're talking about a 2003 206 GTi with an apparently leaking A/C Condenser.
Stupid stupid day today! I finally decided I'd fit the new A/C condenser I have. I really wish I hadn't. Removing the front end to get at it was a b***h with the old fixings solidly rusted in place. I've had this car for many years with no problems so I know these have never been worked in the past. The only instructions I could find online showed the condenser as separate from the fan section. Mine isn't! What looked so simple and logical online turned into a silly silly job in real life. That was a shock.
Now, was the guy at Peugeot who designed the bumper's wheelarch fixing setup actually paid to do that work? An inaccessible nut on a screw fixed into a square plate which SLIDES INTO TWO PLASTIC SLOTS IN THE BUMPER TO HOLD IT IN PLACE WHILE YOU ARE UNSCREWING THE RUSTY NUT!!! He should have been horsewhipped for that and never employed again. I reckon that nut alone must seize in place after about a year of use and is then never to be removed ever again without damage to the plastic plate mount. One of those alone took over 1.5 hours to remove even after it took out the two plastic slots. The other one just sheared off when I finally managed to get a pair of mole grips onto the base.
Anyway, all of the rest of the c**p aside, I'm down to the final stage of releasing the top joint in the A/C piping, the bottom one actually turned out to be simple despite the rust. Special release tools on hand. I did it right this time, buy a set to do the job. Woe is me! The tool won't release the spring sufficiently to get the joint apart. At least it looks that way to me. When the tool seems to be in place I can still see the spring down the gaps in the tool barrel and it looks as though the tool has not gone down fully. It definitely is the right sized bit, the others are too big to fit in the gap or too small to fit snugly round the pipe. I've twisted to rotate it, tapped it with a drift, cursed it and threatened it but it won't go any lower and the joint just will not split.
I've now had to give up for the night and lick my wounds with a beer or two. Can anyone offer any advice or special tips on getting this joint apart?
