Wonder if anyone can help with this?
Low mileage car 48k. Ran like a dream 8 months ago. I laid it up on the drive and came back to it last week. Battery completely flat.
Removed battery and charged it up. Fitted to car and started straight away, BUT, with battery light still on. Got multimeter out and right enough, showing 12V and falling.
Also noted, the battery light would dim slightly and as it did, the climate control display would go off and you could hear the engine speed change.
So, bought a reman alternator and fitted that.
Started up straight away (had the battery on charge) but battery light is still on, and still no charge showing on meter.
Interestingly, when you put the key to pos 1. the climate powers up, you can change the settings, the flaps move to suit (face, floor, screen etc) but the blower doesn't blow. Move to pos 2. and the climate goes off and doesnt respond to any button presses. Back to pos 1 and it stays off. If you turn key off and wait at least 5s it will come back on at pos 1 but again will go off when you move to 2.
I'm not sure if that's related to the problem but it defo stands out as odd.
I've checked every fuse, all ok.
Ive swapped the 3 relays about in the engine fuse box with no change.
I've disconnected the 2 pin plug from the alternator and the light just goes very dim on the dash, still no charge.
Measured the 2 pin plug, approx 7.9V on one leg and 12V on the other. I assume the 12V is the dashboard light and the 7.9 is from the BSI and I think adjusts the charging rate of the alternator.
I've tried the procedure to reset the BSI but it doesnt seem to have helped.
I've cleaned grounds on chassis leg, gearbox and checked the internal ones at the a-pillar. All ok.
Tried a different battery just in case.
Quite a lot of information there. But hopefully someone has a better understanding of the system and can help?

The blower fan is a red herring - the BSI will have shut that down as it cannot see the battery charging.

Check the main earth lead from the battery where its bolted on top of the gearbox & then on to the bodyshell.

Check the wiring harness earth points behind each head lamp.

Car has been laid up - check for rodent damage across the wiring harness inside the engine bay.

I'll check the earth's behind the headlights. The main chassis earth's were all decent tbh.
I've not seen any damage anywhere. The car is incredibly complete, one elderly lady owner from new prior to me. It has every clip and cover in place, every shroud and cover undisturbed.
Every function works from what I can tell, all wipers and lights etc. It's just the alternator not charging and the climate thats abnormal.

Can't you normally run the blower on pos 2? Without starting the engine? I can only get the display on pos 1, when I move to 2 it goes off.

So, checked earths behind headlights, drivers was a bit grotty, I assume from decades of screenwash getting spilt on it. Remade that off with a new crimp and also passenger side.

Plot twist, I had a theory maybe the L / DFM connector might be the wrong way around on the new alternator, or that maybe the connector wasn't seating correct.
So, removed the plug, measured 12V at L and 8V at DFM (from the car). And low and behold, with it disconnected the climate works in both ignition switch positions and the fans also run. Battery light on but very dim.
Connect the lead back up and it goes back to not working.
Swapped the L/DFM just to see if it made any difference but still no charge from alternator.

I'm starting to think that this new alternator might also be broken. I've genuinely checked every single thing I can think of.

Mr BSI meant to check the main earth strap from the battery. If thats gone bad which would be most likely, then youd have the problems your facing. Have you tried a new battery? Once they've gone flat batteries tend to go bad, maybe its not taking a charge.

id checked the main earths originally, it was only the 2 headlight area ones left to do.
but anyways, ...solved it... the replacement alternator was faulty. Fitted a new one and all is good. thanks for the advice along the way
