What is the actual point in these things, I cant think of a proper purpose as I thought it was illegal to have the breather hose off because the oil gives off toxic gases which are then put through combustion to get rid of them???

I don't believe the oil breather is a tested item in the MOT. As to your original question, they're useful if you've fitted an induction kit which doesn't have a fitting to allow for recirculation.

I dont think that much pressure build up in the breather pipe so with it being left open I doubt it would make much difference.
Abzynthe, the best thing would probably to look on your engine where it goes and using a tape or sumething see what would look/fit best
