Hi Everyone, hope you can help me. My MOT is due and my engine warning light has been on for over a year. I had it diagnosed when it first came on and was told it was my emissions but they wasn't sure of the exact problem - could be a "cat convertor problem" they said. I enquired if I would need to have this problem fixed ASAP and they said no it isn't a problem that will break the car so to speak and that I can afford to wait. I then had a MOT a few months later and my car did pass although the tester did say he had to work on my emissions for a while.

I know it is daft not to have had this problem fixed but the engine warning light is still on and I now hear that the MOTs are now far more struct than last year. Will I get an automatic fail and thus need to fix the emissions problem or should I be one step ahead and sort it out before hand - and so to the cost...if it is a cat convertor problem what will the damage be?

I have a 2003...Peagout 206 glx 1.4.

Please advise

Nicholad

Without knowing the fault, no one can advise if your car will fail or not.

Get the codes read again and get an accurate description of the fault. It could be one of the O2 sensors failed, could be the cat or could be completely unrelated.

Quite a few people put Shell v-power fuel in the tank and give the car a good half hour blast down the motorway before the MOT to reduce the emissions. Something as simple as a good service can also reduce them.

Thank you Macca1411 - I will get the code re read and sort the problem out. Will my car fail its MOT automatically because the engine warning light is on? Like I said it was on lasy year but passed.... I don't have long as the MOT is up at the end of the month. I am worried that if I have a service (it is due one) and MOT together it will be expensive and then I will need to shell out anyway to fix the warning light problem - so a very expensive week for me....

As far as I know it's only the ABS or airbag warning light that will be an instant fail. The EML could be caused by 1001 things so it may not be related to safety so shouldn't affect the MOT.

With the right code reading software, you can get the O2 levels displayed on the screen so you should know beforehand if the emissions are excessive.
