Trying shifting down, stick it in 3rd gear and take it all the way up to 5500rpm and then shift up to 4th
failing that than Me thinks it needs a full service...
Start with Air filter and an oil change
My 1.4 gets to 110mph so something isnt right with yours
A 1999 1.4 will fetch around £850 depending on condition and mileage and you can buy a GTi for around the same price these days

It's a 1.4.
How fast do you think it's going to be?

Thats about right i think....mine takes a lifetime to get to 110mph even when going downhill
As i said before best thing you can do is give it a service such as oil change, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter e.t.c.

Mine is the same, I would make the most of 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear in the power band on fast roads, because you will not get any acceleration in 5th under 3000rpm

My 1.4 has done a 110mph, but it was hard work, its hard work getting it to 100, but to get to 70 i do have to change down, i normally change to 4th at about 60mph, once at 70 mines fine,
but as said a service will help

same with mine, give it a hammering in 4th and you should feel it more when you change to 5th, get it to 90mph and things start to get a little shacky with mine :s
