Hi all, was wondering if anyone could help with costing up the job below

I am having my rear axle replaced and the garage I took it too suggested I get the exhaust replaced at the same time as whoever owned the car before has put the exhaust on wrong so it's rattling about. The exhaust will only be replaced from the cat back excluding the cat.

The garage has said that the job will cost £385 excluding VAT,

200 for the axle
80 for the exhaust
and then 3 hours labour at £105,

Does this seem like a reasonable price? I know the axle is 200 and assumed 100 to fit so the price looks good to me with the exhaust fitted at the same time pretty much free?

Cheers

Where are they sourcing the axle from? Re-conditioned? Or Second hand?

Shut it u stupid little f**k, what's the point in posting in all my treads being such a c***? Least I can afford a gti180, and to get the cam belt done!

So apparently everyone knows my financial situation? If I wanted a 180 I would have bought a 180 simples Smile

I am getting the Axle myself from Axles Direct so it's re-conditioned. The garage suggested I did it that way as it avoids them having to put tax on it.

£105 quid is a cracking price to take off and fit a exhaust and rear axle at a garage.

My friend took off and replaced my axle for £100 and that was cheap.

Cheers for that, I found a place that specialises in them and they fit them for 300 all in but is a trek to get there. I then went to this garage and they said they would fit it pretty much for the same price. I also said there would be work coming there way in the future as it needs more doing for the mot.

Although they will probably hike the price up and say the wheel fell off etc.

My rear axle bearings were in good nic, it was the front rubber mounts that had worn and a bit of play in them, so i bought a decent second hand axle from the scrappies £100 with low mileage, and cleaned it up and repainted, then swapped over.

My project when the warmer weather comes is to refurbish the old axle, new bearings and rubber mountings and keep as spare or sell on.

Ye I think mine is foowked! The wheel was dented so had to get the alloy fixed, tyre was egg shaped so had to get a new one. One of the previous owners ripped the plastic trying to wire up the stereo instead of checking how to get the crews out?!?!?

The arm that pivots on the rear, doesn't pivot and instead the whole joint moves up and down and a bolt is half hanging out but is seized. Must have been some pothole!

Just an update on this,

Cost a bit more in the end (Surprise, Surprise) I know it would though.

Exhaust was 80 as stated.
Labour required an extra hour so 140 no 105

The big extra cost has come from the replacement of the ABS sensors, the axle was corroded to hell and gone, never been replaced so looked like the original from 1999, everything was pretty welded in place including the sensors so that added an extra 65 to the bill.

So that brings the total to 485 with the axle at 200 pounds. 100 over the original estimate, the drive home was bliss though, no banging, squeaking, clunking! I was in GTI heaven lol Wink
