Hi,

I was driving down the road and heard a clicking/catching kind of sound.

Car just goes really slow and engine struggling. Cut out as went to pull off at traffic light very easily.

Called the AA and the guy said that the timing belt needs replacing.

Someone I know has offered to replace it for £80 including the kit. He said it would include cambelt aswell.

What do you think?? he owns a 106 and did his own before. Car is 2003 at 67000 miles and he said the AA guy said they are due at 72,000 but better tog et them done before.

That sounds like a really good price to be fair.
Don't argue the opinions of idiots.

If the car cut out then its either snapped or slipped.

So bent valves + damaged pistons.
Happend to me a couple of years ago. Engine rebuild job.

Forgot to mention.

I've been shopping around for a garage to change the cambelt on my latest 206.

Been quoted £360 by one...

Parts alone from GSF are £108inc VAT

Get the waterpump done at the same time.

The only problem I can see with having a mate do it is what happens if he like Howey said f***s it up?

It would be your words against his, best of paying that little bit more and get it done at a garage.

More that often it will cause damage to the valves and pistons

have a belt put on it and if its start to missfire and pop you have problems

i dont think ive seen a timing belt slip that hasnt done damage on a interference engine

Hi,

It was more like a catching sound at about 2,000rpm. He said that its something to do with the timing belt tensioner wearing out, its was a very faint noise not sounding as if it would do damamge but if carried on being driven then it definatly would.

Think i caught it just before, The AA guy removed the cover to the cambelt and said the belt looks fine although it should be done soon.

The guy i was talking about wanted £80 just for doing it and the a further £75 for parts so as there is no warranty provided unlike when going to a garage i have decided to do it via a mobile mechanic who has quoted me the same price £75 for parts and £80 labour.

I have the mechanic guy coming tomorrow morning to do cambelt/timing belt, i mentioned to him about the water pump and he said its only worth changing if its leaking, should I got ahead and replace it anyway, even if it isnt?

When the AA guy came he started it and from under the bonnet rev'd it slightly to about 2,000rpm and there was a slight sound as if a bit of metal was catching on something, then he said turn it off straight away and towed me back.

Could there be any more damamge ??

I would replace it as if i leaks in the next 5k the whole job will need doing again

some people say a brand new tentioned timing belt can put stress on a old waterpump

agree with that, like when some people just replace the belt and not the tensioners ect
