it was a success, well sort of.

managed to do the oil/filter and the pollen filter. managed to work out the air filter, not hard at all not its just a case of which to buy. now i just need to find the fuel filter but it would seem edward has given me a heads up on that.

now for the problem....when looking for the spark plugs i moved what i think is a breather pipe running from the air filter towards the main engine block. the thing was that brittle it snapped clean in two. anyone have any idea where i can get this replaced other than peugoet or shall i just get one from the scrap yard.

when i did finally get to the spark plugs i pulled them out to find that they were covered in oil. no i fully admit i dont really know what goes on under the bonnet of a car but surely thats not right. on the topic of spark plugs anyone recommend best ones/where to buy/cost.

some thanks below for all those that have help out.. couldn't have done it without you Very Happy

edward.

cheers for the info. unfortunately had to buy all my stuff today so couldn't get the savings by going online but that site seems quite good, now its just time to find the fuel filter.

E5GDM & cd-vrs

cheers for the reply. ended up going for valvoline in the end. know its about a tenner more than the other stuff people have told me but hopefully this will be ok until the next oil change. then i can go for the total oil

nick180

yeah good idea. didn't manage to do it this time as forgot to buy the stuff, and dont fancy emptying out £42 worth of oil to do it. think it will have to go on the list of things to do next time.

drunknmunky

cherrytree is not to far from me. i'm in lower darwen between jct 4 and 5 just off blackamoor road if you know it. cheers for the help again.

mine did the same, its just a breather. i taped mine up with bright red electrical insulation tape along the length. looks pretty cool Smile and still works fine!

The breather hose is cheap enough to buy new from your local dealer. £24 or so.
I can PM you the part number later, they get really brittle with age so not worth buying a used one.

cheers for the respone. if you wouldn't mind sending me the part number later that would be good. as for taping it up, think that will have to do in the meantime.

any ideas on the oil around the spark plugs.

car has not been running well recently with the engine management light coming on the other day. tried to start it up today and it would not fire up, managed to eventually but only just. just wondering if they are all interlinked.

drunknmunky do you know anywhere decent to get the codes read in blackburn so i can see whats wrong with my car.

cheers

not sure about the sparks, mine have oil around as well but my engine is certainly not a shining example.

bosch super 4's are the best sparks to use in a 206, try and avoid NGK

It's time to bite the bullet and have a go at giving my x reg gti a service by myself..like they say you can only learn through doing, and copying all the how to threads!!

couple of questions though if somebody could help before i go to eurocarparts and buy all the items

1. believe i need 5w40 oil is that correct, also does it matter what brand oil it is as they only have valvoline branded and i have never heard of it.

Total Quartz 7000 10w40 or Total Quartz 9000 5w40. Get it from Peugeot or AEP Direct

2. the oil filter they recommend is either a mann for £6.72 or a guttmann for £4.20. same again will either do or am i best trying to get one from peugeot.

Get the oil filter from Peugeot, they aren't expensive. Make sure you get a new sump washer as well

3. air filters. was going to get a k&n one, not expecting it to give me any performance increase but is it better for my car than a standared peugeot one or the guttmann/bosch ones for £8.04/11.40 at ecp.

A aftermarket panel filter will increase airflow and save money on servicing this item in the long run, but they don't filter as well as a paper one

4. anybody know where the fuel filter is off the top of there head. the how to guide says its near the wheel arch but somebody posted it is not there on the gti. not had a chance to look yet but hopefully somebody can give me a heads up as not really got a clue when it comes to anything mechanical.
It's either under the right rear wheel arch, if its not there it's a self cleaning one in the fuel tank that doesn't need to be replaced
cheers for any advice, off to get the parts in a hour so any advice will be greatly recieved!!!!

The breather pipe can be fixed for less if you use the couplings/junctions from the original hose and fit some cheap silicone hose from Ebay.
