Hi all,

Ive just changed my spark plugs and the plug I took out of cylinder 1 was covered in oil.

My engine has covered 108k, would the oil on the plug be associated with engine wear or just a leak somewhere?

There is no smoke through the exhaust or anything and it doesnt get through excess oil either.

Any ideas at all??

Just spoke to my dad, he said it could have leaked in there from the top when you have topped it up or serviced it last time, if its not using oil i wouldnt worry too much, best bet is to take it back out in a week or so's time and see if there's anymore, if not, happy days lol

Haynes manual claim if the plug is black and oily, then it is likely that the engine is fairly worn and the mixture is too rich

head gasket they dont always boil over but the can leak oil to the piston just depends where its gone get a compression test and the you will no where you stand

It's pretty unlikely to be running rich on just one cylinder. Check for head hasket leaks first, if it's not in the coolant, then check the oil cap for gunge, but getting th compression checked would be best.

If it is a piston ring I would of thought you would have blue smoke coming from the exhaust.

How much oil is it using? Are you sure you havent over filled as well.

Coolent and oil have always been fine, and today was no exception Smile

The socket was clean when it came out.

oily plugs can be spliiage, leaking valve guides (part of the head) rings but to be honest if its not using oil , it drives ok, no oil in the water and no smoke then i wouldnt worry

not alwats the case a blown head can leak to 1 cilinder or even blow between 2 cilinders a compression test will only find a blown gasket if the gasket is blown between 2 clinders ie 1 n3 2 pitons will be low on compression while 2 are as normal, the normal reading of compression is around 150 or around that region. if the gasket is gone then coolent can gat to the cilinder this would course the spark plug to hit and miss! and this will result in a oiled up plug!! or a plug thats ont running rite

point taken, BUT if coolant was getting into the cylinder the car would be white smoking. so it's, again, doubtful

correct but if the oil is goin in to the water it goes round the header and rad, so wouldnt smoke
