i sometimes loosen it from hub so you can get the hub down a bit more to get the shock out.

You need to take the hub off the wishbone and then knock the hub off the damper. Then the damper can be unbolted with the top mount from the car.

This is how to get the hub off the wishbone.

 


Then knock the hub off the bottom of the damper.

 


Then the damper will come out.
