I have always been into motor sport and particularly stage rallying. been looking to get a rally car for a while but never had the money to do so.

So when i saw this cherry red part prepd 2051.6gti for sale close to me in december, i had to go for a look, £840 pound later it was mine!

Brief spec when brought
H reg 205 1.6gti with 97000 on the clock
OMP bolt in cage
Hydrawlic hand brake and rear disc conversion
refurbed 1.9gti speedline alloys with good tyres
sabelt bucket seat and harness
cockpit electrical cut off
battery in boot
stainless steel powerflow exhaust
rose joisted close swift gear lickage
2x extra 1.9 speedline alloys
4x extra 1.6 pepper pot alloys.

Plan is to bring the car up to full stage spec, unfortunatlly it hasnt been MSA log booked which means slightly strickter regs to meet.

anyway progress is slow at the minute i have been taking plenty of photos as i go, main problem i am having at the minute is the prevoius owner had it standing outside for about 6 months so there are a few bits of rust starting to take hold.

When i brought her

Thought id load up a few more pictures so i can get up to date!!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Rubbed down and KUrusted

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Holes welded and a bit of filler

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

the finished arcticle, passenger side was abit worse than this, pics will follow in another update.

Couple of pics of the underside after getting rid of the majority of the surface rust, sprayed up with primmer, and then given a good 3 or 4 coats of wax oil, was going to paint the underside black was a fair effort and budget is super tight,

After welding and patching all the holes in the boot about 4 in total, i gave it all a good coat of primmer then four of five coats of cherry red and was going to coat with a further 2 coats clear laycer, but i ran out half way through!! Left hand side of the picture is the finished product, really happy with it, will be even better when i finish the other half, still hasnt been done as i started work on the front!!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Rear bumper and vallace back on, all new bolts etc as the majority snapped when removing. you can see the size of the rear caliper in this shot, any idea wha they are off??

A few more for your enjoyment!

Started abit more work on the front, the reason the taking bits off is to ensure that if when on an event a bit neeeds to be taken off it can be qute easily, also its a chance to treat any rust before it gets any worse!

Bumper removed, abit dirty and a few bits of surface rust, and one nasty piece near the rad, but over quite good

Further stripped down and cleaned up

Removed the fan to realise that the rad was f**ked

You can see the state of the rad here, bit of primmer and also note the newly painted black slam panal!

Fully primmered up and shee had a little trip out of the garage to make way for the 206, think it looks mean as sitting here!

Right this up date should bring us up to date!!

after stripping out the passenger side front wing, i found this nice patch of rust, i have chopped the worse out here so it does look bigger than it was!!

Preped the rest of the arch with new plate seen to the bottom it has only been welded from the wheel side in the photo, it did get welded both sides in the end but i didnt get a photo unfortunally.

welding in the arch

Heres the finished job all sprayed up, i no its not the neatest of jobs but its strong and the majority is covered over anyway, when bits start going back on.

while filler etc was drying i brought some air horns (part of the regs) for £11, and did a mock up of where i wanted to mount them

Windscreen washer tank and wiring back in, tried to make it as tidy as i could as it was all crossed over when i got it.

heres a shot of the newly sprayed front panel

Old rad out, with some bits going back on as well!!!

New rad in, also replaced the altenator belt while i had the old rad out as it makes the job 100% easier

Few more componets added and in the process of wiring the air horns up, was slighty more tricky than expected but is all done now!!

Bumper back on the car! majority of the body work is now done, so i can now concetrate on the more expensive bits!

This is basically how the car stands today although i have put the wheels back on and turned it around, i started to fit the petrol tank guards last sunday but was abit hungover and gave up because i new id just make a crap job!!! My main problem at the moment is that the car is still situated at my parents place in mid wales, meaning a 300mile round trip whenever i want to work on it, this therefore means that funds are a little low! next visit is probably going to be weekend of the 1st of august, but thats my birthday and the harry flaters rally on the sunday so i cant see allot geting done that weekend!!!!

UPDATE: 06/08/2010

Not so much as an update but more like going backwards!!!

But first what i have managed to get done not allot! Ive always been paranoid about the fuel filler pipe running within the rear wheel arch, i know its out of the way but i wanted to give it some more protection.

I made this out of an old boiler cover which was lying about in work, its a good enough thickness and will give the little bit of protection needed, managed to bend and shape it so it follows the lines of the filler pipe, then temp fixed it in place, so i could pop rivit it into place, pre drilled the holes then rivited away!! unfortunatly i have just realiased i forgot to take a pic of it installed! will be in next update!, i also then filled any gaps with expanding fire foam, it all needs painting still and i know its not the best bit of fabrication but will do the job nicely!!

The worse bit of the day came after this was finished, i took the car for a bit of a run to realease the rear brakes, all good, however putting it back in the garage the hand break failed while no one was in the car, and the car rolled slowy down hill and into my 206!, i small not notisable strach mark on the 206, but the 205 hit in such a way that the bolt holding the bumper on ways pulled throught the bumper!!! so now more work to do than expected!!!! very annoyed!!

After looking on your therd i checked my hydralic handbrake and its linked to the cables as well so hopefully should be fine for the MOT!

Progress on this has stopped at the minute, started my own company up end of summer so cash has been tight, and the 206 has decided that something needs to break on it every month so all my spare time is spent messing with that, however my mate has arranged a trip to nurbenburg for his stag do so it might be a push to get it ready for that!!

got a bit done to the car on the weekend will update with pictures later, finished the rear wheel wells and got the intercomm all fitted, also took the back bumper off to repair the damage done in the little bump it had, ended up bonding in some washers to the mounting points in an aim to reinforce them, get to know weather it worked or not! pics up later when i can get the card reader to play ball!!
