My windscreen is full of really small chips, you can't see them unless the sun shines on it in the right way but when it does it looks almost like glitter has been sprinkled over it or something!
Has anyone else has this problem before? I have tried cleaning it loads of time to make sure it wasn't something stuck to the glass.. but no
Any idea if Quinn would cover it as part of the windscreen protection?

If it annoys you that much break it somehow & pay the £50 excess to replace it.
I recently had a chip filled by Autoglass, like you said, you can still see it in bright sunlight but it doesn't bother me too much.

its been known for quite a while, although i am an old git 
... its something to do with some sort of "mini explosion" it creates when the ceramic strikes the window. the weight of the window then causes it to break up/shatter.
someone who knows a little about science might be able to expand on this.

I remember there being a big conspiracy about micro chips a few years back. Hundreds of people around the UK wre complaining, suggesting some kind of organised vandalism. Turned out it was just everyday wear and tear and gritter dust causing it haha.

I just thought it was the fact when you break up ceramics you end up with an exceptionally sharpe point, throw it hard enough and the fact both glass and ceramic have a similar hardness means the glass shatters. A bit like the 'smacking two hammers together' thing.

apparently not, i did read it somewhere but cant find it atm.
its an electronic charge it creates that weakens, then the weight of the weakened glass shatters the screen.
i think you could actually place some on glass too, then over time you would get the same effect.
(... please dont go out and trash your or anyone elses car trying this tho)

Well not according to this. The mini explosion idea got shot down.
They do not break(shatter) laminated saftley glass like windshields, I think you mean tempered safety glass as used in doors. It has to do with hardness. Glass is actually "harder" than iron on the Mohs scale, and spark plug ceramic (technically called "aluminium oxide ceramic") is much harder than glass. Aluminium oxide ceramic actually rates a 9 on the Mohs scale; diamonds are 10, glass is 6.5, and iron is 4.5. That's the key to the whole thing, and why it's surprisingly hard to break a window with a hammer and surprisingly easy to break it with a small, light little shard of innocent white spark plug ceramic.

ahhh, that explains it a lot better, perhaps many years ago it wouldve been easier to break the actual windscreen, but not anymore it seems.
..... dont think ill bother testing the theory though

In the old days windscreens where made of the same toughened glass that the rest of the car windows where made from.
If a stone shattered it while driving you where meant to punch the rest of the glass out so you could see where you where going & safely bring the car to a stop.
Laminated glass is much safer then toughened glass for a windscreen
