I changed my steering wheel this afternoon, just from a standard to a GTI leathery one, nothing chavy.

Anyway, mine seemed nearly impossible to get off, but I eventually managed to pull it off...and also the connector for the horn Sad

The air bag cables are fine, and the air bag light goes out, but the horn doesn't work, which is how I came to the conclusion that it's the horn wires that were severed.

I tried to thread the wire back in (as you will see in the pic) just to keep it out the way, but it came back out again...irrelevant.

here's a picture.

My MOT isn't due until November, so I'm not in a massive rush as I've never used my horn, I prefer to shout and swear, but I still want it fixed.

Question(s) is

Is it easily fixed, can I do it myself or does a professional need to do it?
How much for part, and does anyone have one?
Do I need a specific part for my model of car?

Cheers for any help you can throw at me.

2002 1.6 5dr Black Edition.

Needs a new spool

EDIT:
I paid £7 for one second hand, took about 20 mins to swap over. It needs to be from a non-plexed car

EDIT again
If you buy a second hand one, make sure they remove it when the wheels are straight, otherwise you'll snap it when you turn your steering wheel

PM me if you find it to be intact my good man Smile

Also...

Update, or sorts.

I just went for a drive, try out the new wheel...and obviously the broken cables were rolling around inside, so I removed them.

I showed them to a mechanic who, coincidently, was round to fit my mums new alternator, and he said my air bag wont deploy now If I was to have a crash because the broken cable has something to do with the air bag signal, such and such.

This is the cable that actually broke.

Am I to be worried.

What He Said

The airbag wires are connected to the orange plug.

That grey plug is just for the horn.

Depending on how far back the wires have broken you could just solder them back together & cover them in heatshrink Wink

I didn't think these wires could be soldered, they seem too thin.
