Does anyone know if some GTi's were factory fitted without a spoiler. I have a GTi but it never had one. It doesn't really bother me but if this came with one as standard i'm tempted to fit one and not have to tell my insurance about it.
Also can anyone clarify the actual BHP of the standard GTi, i've seen it listed as 135, 136, 137, 138 & 140.

Its 138. A few older GTi's don't have spoilers, pretty sure the Ins. wouldn't know as it is called a GTi spoiler and most came with one.

Not all 138's had them. My 99 GTi doesn't. Shame really as they look so much better with a spoiler.

The normal GTI never had a spoiler fitted as standard, it was an optional extra 
As for fitting one & not telling the insurance about it, they & anybody else can find out exactly what spec / was fitted when it rolled out the factory by looking on Peugeot service box, all they need is the vin number.

insurance companies are only really bothered about 'performance altering' modifications. Never known there to be a rise due to adding a spoiler! lol (besides how do they know it wasnt on the car)
iirc all the phase 1 GTi came without spoilers (they were an option)

That's a valid argument but what if the previous owner had installed one and I didn't know about it? I would be thinking, "GTi - with spoiler, sounds normal to me". I would be insuring it as it came when I bought it (technically).
From an insurance point of view, adding a spoiler would be classed as making the car more attractive to thieves or making it stand out more than it would otherwise do.

I don't understand how 'optional extras' work with insurance. As each car obviously has an insurance catagory. If two people bought a 1.4 for example. One could be completely standard (steel wheels, non painted parts) and the other could have alloys, spoiler and whatever added on.
Yet both will be classed as the same insurance group and unless you know and unless you know what optional extras were from new you aren't going to be able to declare them.

My insurance company wasnt bothered about me adding the spoiler on, there was no extra charge they just added it on in the mod's bit of the documentation & sent out a new copy for my records.

i told my insurance about all the additions i made (spoiler, filter, exhaust, ICE etc). they werent bothered unless the mods increased engine output.
upto you tho i guess.

The problem is, I don't want to call the insurance and say "will it cost me to add a spoiler?" as if the answer is yes and I decide not to go through with it then they are likely to add comments onto my policy to say that I had enquired about it. Then if I make a claim and they assess the vehicle and see it on there they could say it is void. I gues it is the chance I take.
How hard are they to fit a standard spoiler?

Or you can try to make a new quote and ask

They either stick on with something like tiger seal or they bolt on, or both if you really dont want to loose it lol

I did the same thing for my exhaust which had a stainless steel tailpipe with a more throaty sound (but not too noisey) and I could not prove if it added any BHP or not. I told them I wasn't going to bother fitting it but then I did it anyway. I then changed insurance company the following year. So if I say to the new company that the vehicle is how I received it from previous owner then I guess they cannot call the policy void.
I would love to know how the insurance companies work!

Depends on how you fit it.
Mines bolted & stuck down.
Genuine Peugeot spoiler comes with fitting template & idiot proof instructions.
