Hi all,

Sorry to be posting about a problem so early but I need some help from people who know their stuff on 206's.

I bought a 51 plate 206 1.9d yesterday, 89000 miles recently been serviced. You know what its like when you first get a car, the few days after you are worrying that something will go bang etc.

Well I got home yesterday and just had a look under the bonnet, it smelled quite coolanty hot. Checked everything and it all seemed to be ok, I noticed that the coolant temp on the dash was sitting between 70 and 80 but that it kept going up and down slightly whilst driving. I also checked the oil cap and it was fine but really hot. I know diesel engines run hotter but is this normal?

Should I be concerned about the coolant type smell.. this is after use and after driving for say 20 miles or so. Im not getting any warnings on the dash and the temp appears to be sitting normal..although i think 80 is normal in one of these?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If there is no sign of a coolant leak, then probably isn't one. It could just be a bit been spilt when it was serviced. If you are in any doubt, get it pressure checked at a garage. I think the temp you are getting is normal, if anything slightly under normal. Welcome to the site btw. Don't forget to use the search option before asking questions. More than likely, someone has already experienced the same problem.

Had a quick look this morning at the coolant header tank. Should you be able to see the level? I dont think there is any coolant in my car at all! Although im not getting a low coolant light on the dash and the temp is sitting at 80. Felt both the rad pipes and both are warm..the heaters are blowing hot as well.

But no matter how much i rock the car i cant see a level in the header? Should it be a certain colour and what type of coolant should I use. Sorry never owned a 206 before, always been vag.

Thank you guys.

You should NOT be smelling coolant when you lift the bonnet.......if you DO smell it, it means you have a leak!......take the screw top off the header tank and see if it contains coolant up to a 'level' mark on the exterior of the bottle (usually approx 3/4 full is the correct level) . If you have a leak but cant see any sign of leakage then it is usually the water pump where it is leaking from, look for any wetness around the crank pulley for confirmation of this.

Just went to peugeot and got some proper coolant, came home and it took 2 and a half litres. Bloody header tank is not see through so have no idea where the level is. Bad design that!!!

Anyway I had a look and what was actually in the coolant system and it lloks like the last owner ONLY filled it up with water and no coolant of any kind. So I have topped it up for now but guessing I will have to do a proper flush out of the system before long!

well i cant tell if it was empty. It must have been to take 2 and a bit litres right? Filled it up for now and am keeping an eye on it to see if it goes anywhere.. cant visibly see a leak anywhere both hoses are fine, checked around the header and no leaks.. someone mentioned water pump but where on the engine would i look for that?? Nothing is on the drive leaking.

I get the feeling its been very regularly topped up........and is going to continue that way until the leak is located and repaired

Smelling coolant when you open the bonnet is the clue to knowing that you have a leak..
