would I be right in saying that... to replace a gearbox in a S reg 1.1 LX, the donor box would have to come from a 206 no younger than a '01? or are all year gearboxes compatible?

your car is a year 1998, so your looking for a 1.1 box from a 1998+

gearboxes are interchangeable as long as its a MA gearbox and has a cable or hydraulic clutch [which ever yours is]
