Hello Peugeot folk,

I noticed my clutch was a bit sticky when changing gear on Saturday - not everytime but often enough to concern me. I won't be able to speak to my mechanic until Monday, but I was wondering if it's safe to drive in the meantime?

I did a search and from what I can see it's probably my clutch cable (I hope so as I assume that's cheaper to repair than the whole clutch), but I need to go to work on Monday and it's quite a long drive with a fair bit of gear changing. What happens when you're clutch cable fails - should I leave my car at home and catch the train or is it early enough to risk it until I can get to the garage on Tuesday?

Any advice is gratefully received.

Thanks

Trudie

Risk it Very Happy and yeah there is a big difference between a clutch cable and a whole clutch Smile I know lots of people with a stocky clutch and it doesn't effect them

Thanks Very Happy That's good to hear. I've got terrible car paranoia and fear the worst when something goes wrong. Comes from years of drioving very old cars I suppose, lol!

first of all . you need to describe the symptoms ?

when my clutch cable went, it wasnt the cable itself. it was the self adjusting mechanism which kept readjusting itself . i would depress the clutch pedal and i would suddenly feel a snap sound and suddenly i would find my clutch pedal stuck at the floor . then it would be OK again but i could feel the biting point was alot lower then usual .

Good point Leon.

When I release the clutch after changing gear it gets stuck a little bit somewhere around the biting point. It doesn't stay stuck - it just feels a bit resistent then comes back up again.

That Rawluk - That sounds like a reasonable cost, but I'm guessing your mechanic's doing you a deal - still mine's very cheap, so hopefully it won't cost too much for me either. Like you say though it probably won't do the same thing when the professional looks.

I can change gears at the moment still. I've driven without 1st and 2nd before but it is a bit hairy and I can't understand the descriptions I've found for driving without a clutch and as my commute's about 40 miles each way on country roads, I don't really fancy doing that anyway. I've got RAC as a backup but just don't want something too dangerous to occur.

the part is cheap anyway it's just the labour you know how some garages ripe you off for little jobs!! hes only charging me £20 to put it in!
i'd go to a few garages and tell them the problem and see which gives you the best quote!! no more then £70 i would pay out!! yeah i get what your saying about the danger side!! ive got a2 year old and it does it on the motorway and when im doing 20 mph it's unpredicatable!! it hadnt done it for months and then last two weeks its been doing it every other day so im glad it's been spotted and sorted out!!
