Hi all, when i drive my car, there is a kind of whirring noise, which you can particularly hear when changing gear. the whirring gets louder as the car is revved. But when the car is just sitting in neutral, it is hard to hear the whirring, although it is there.
Someone said its the alternator, can anyone confirm this from what ive said? As if it was the alternator, idve thought the noise would be at a steady volume? But im not expert

thanks

sounds like the input shaft bearing in the gear box has gone, mine did the same. best to take it to a gear box spec. and they will tell you better.

I have the exact small thing as we speak, went to peugeot the other day and the tech said after listening to it that it sounds like the power steering pump with no fluid in it or the alternator, after removing the belt and start the car, the noise should go away and i have found out that the noise is coming from the fixed jockey pulley.

I'd check the fluid, then remove the belt and start it up to double check it's coming from that area. With the belt off check each pulley by spinning it and it will be the one which makes a slight noise which will have gone. This is what peugeot told me to do Smile And my mechanic has double checked it Smile

aha, result, thanks mrs howey. Friend at kwik fit said it was either the power steering pump, or alternator (but think its more likely the alternator). But didnt really wanna go spend £100 on alternator for it not to be whats wrong with it. Will give this a go, thanks
