Quick question....

Could everything from a GTi abs rear axle be switched over onto say a drum rear axle without abs??

Are they both the same when bare??

yee that torsion bar, anti roll bar, shocks can be switch over to a drum axle

You wanting to put the GTi hubs onto the drum axle? The stub axles are different.

If you going to do that then it's easier to change to whole rear axle than change all the bits over Smile

Ive done it before with a Saxo axle.Got a drum axle, and switched all my stuff over from a disc axle.Only takes about 30mins.

Stub axles can be removed and changed too.

Was just wondering if the abs stuff would be an issue.

No wouldn't have thought so.
If you can do the whole lot in 30mins i think you should video it so we can all see it being done, it would be a good how to, too show people how to do it Smile

The axle is only 4 bolts to remove

ok, so it can be done (dunno bout 30mins tho! lol) but tbh, whats the point?

the only things worth changing over are the arb's and torsion bar. iirc the beam and arms are identical

they can be a pig when they are seized tho, and difference between the two from a scrappy isnt that much more to warrant a changeover.

i've just stripped my and replaced the needle roller bearings and the bushes. think it totalled just under 150 quid. not a difficult job either.

Reason i have asked this question is as stated above.The price difference between a drum and disc axle.

My local scrappies want £200 for a disc axle or £150 for a drum axle.Now the other scrappies local to me that i normally use charge £40 for a drum axle.

My axle has a small bit of play in the pin/bearing so could do with being changed.

I done it before with my old Vtr.Got a drum axle from a 1.4 Furio and swapped all my stuff over.Axle was perfect, and still on the car so i was able to check for play.It had none and sailed the MOT.

I have maybe exagerated a bit with the time though as it wasn't a full strip down.I left the Furio ARB and torsion bars in place, and just stripped everything off the stub axles and switched them over.Was p**s easy.Had to swap the stub axles over though as the disc set-up has longer stub axles.


@ Mr_Cellexe, talk to me about what you done.Did you change the pin and bearings due to play in them??

nope, changed them because they were utterly knackered! lol. rings were split and rusted to hell. after 11yrs i think the seals had gone and the grease dried up!

still, its an easy part to work on really.
