I know there are several of these listed and I have read through most and gotten some answers however i have other questions.
My OH and I have bought me a poorly 206, she came without an engine and had various other bits missing, we got an engine and got her running and found one or two minor issues.
Odometer: I previously read on this forum that the odometer works via ribbon cable and as mine wasn't working decided the clocks needed to come out so that could be checked. Then, upon checking the rest of her before deciding how close she is for MOT found that one side of the brakes is weak, would appear to be caused by a siezed axle, I've heard this is fairly common and also the speedo doesnt work.
Today I removed the clocks and found that the ribbon cable to the odometer is indeed damaged so thats knackered and the bulb was blown too! Would the cable explain why the speedo doesn't work? The other gauges seem fine and the interior light seems normal. Or is there something else behind the speedo? We thought about replacing the ribbon then decided it may just be easier to get replacement standard clocks - would it be a simple swap over or would the ECU need re-mapping too? If new clocks can just be slotted in I think i'll go for that rather than messing about getting the cable soldered on, neither me or OH have that steady a hand!!
Also the axle - is it possible to free off a siezed axle or will that need replacing? I'm guessing with a free axle the braking will be more even (hoping!!)
The car is a 2000 (W) petrol LX 1.4 5dr non air-con model.
Thank you in advance

You said the interior light works fine, if you put the door on the safety catch (as if its not closed properly) and drive it does the interior light flash and the car beep 3 times when it's set to doors?
If it does then this tells you that your speed sensor is working and your clocks are probably at fault. You don't need to re-map the ecu or change any settings, they will be plug and play if you get the right ones. Make sure it has the same number of plugs as yours and don't buy a multiplexed one (October 2001> with 1 plug) because it won't work. Your age car should be preplexed so the mileage will show whatever is saved on the clocks. You can have the mileage altered to the original by professionals.

I'll need to re-plug the clocks in to try that so I'll have a look tomorrow and see what happens. I will be buying like for like clocks and Im not to worried about what mileage is displayed aslong as its bot hugely over 100k.
Thank you for this advice, shall re-post with the news tomorrow
If it turns out the clocks aren't at fault after this test, where do I find the speed sensor?

Ok, I've re-plugged in the clocks and tested, get no beeps and the interior light doesn't flash. I have changed the speed sensor and still nothing from the speedo. It has been driven with a diagnostic machine plugged in and that shows no speed either, does this sound more likely to be a wiring issue? How prone are the speed sensor's on these cars? Could it be possible i had 2 duff ones?

Passenger side wheel arch, remove the plastic arch liner & check the main wiring loom at the inner wing, wires have been known to break here & cause issuse with the speedo / speed sensor.

Thanks, will give that a look then. Also, when it was being driven with the diagnostics machine connected we got fault code 36 - speed sensor circuit - im going to take that as a wiring issue then...??

Sounds like a wiring fault to me unless you have another duff sensor.
The wiring behind the passenger side arch liner has caused this kind of fault before, check the wiring & the connectors.

Thanks again, will have a look at that wiring tomorrow, sounds like its possibly going to be that.
Any ideas on the axle front? Is there any chance it might free off? Or would replacing it be better?

Thanks all, got the speedo issue sorted - the pulse/signal wire was broken. Odometer still knackered though due to a bust ribbon cable so still in need of a 2 plug cluster if anyone has any...
